If you were in Terry Schiavo's position, who would you rather have decide your fate?

Pretty interesting take on it from someone who alluded to the case. If roles were in reversed, who would you rather have as your advocate?

I would not really want an advocate. I would rather that my parents and my wife and children duke it out. It would be more entertaining for the rest of you that way.

could you make it fair and add something impartial like a pair of dice?

out of those two, none. id want my spouse to be my advocate. personally, i get along great with my family and they know my wishes is such a situation, but i think that there are a lot of things my family doesnt know about me that my spouse would.

A family member with my best interest at heart. (although if an evangelical christian and an ACLU member were duking it out, i'd assume the ACLU member would be fighting for my interest).

Let the spouse decide. The courts agree.

On the bottom of my list are the moral-busybodies of the religous right. I'm still waiting for them to claim to have seen a sigh from The Lord telling them to storm the building.

(A clap of thunder! It must be the Lord. He commands us to leave our trailers to do His will!)

I think they meant that if you knew something like that was going to happen to you, what would you want done.

Given that the ACLU wouldn't be involved unless they were fighting for the rights of my legal advocate to make choices, and would be impartial to the actual decision, I would choose the ACLU, rather than a group that would try to forcefeed their version of the right choice down my throat (in a plastic tube, no less).

I agree with loki here, the ACLU and conservative evangelical Christian would not be at the top of my list. With the ACLU it's often not about who is deserving of justice and defense so much as which cases best serve to make precendent, not always the same thing.

I'd rather be organ donor and let remains of my body buried after loss of brain. So if I knew some bad things would happend to me I'd make my will early and decide myself :)

What if your spouse, child, parent, or doctor were Evangelical Christians?

Then you probably would be too, and would agree with their decisions.
You choose your spouse and you raise your children, so it's reasonable to assume they are closer to you than anyone else.

I didn't put the ACLU at the bottom of my list like loki put Christians on the bottom of his;)
Also, what if they were also a Christian and part of the ACLU?:Q (is that possible?:p )

Don't you realize the ACLU is forcing their version of the right choice down our throats?

Or you only blame Christians for all the troubles?

The ACLU generally takes on rights and freedoms issues. This has included aiding people exercising rights (usually first amendment rights) to make statements that most ACLU members find misguided or even offensive.

If by 'force down your throat' you mean they don't accept the arbitrary trampling of rights, regardless of who is doing the trampling, then yes, they do force it down people's throats.

I can't imagine for a moment that the ACLU would make involvement in something like this contingent on what, exactly, the husband wanted to do; I know they have taken on cases for people they were ideologically at odds with, except in their shared conviction that protected freedoms sometimes need someone to help protect them.

A lot of ACLU members are too flaming liberal even for my tastes, but I very much respect the work they do.

edit - first one I thought of that the ACLU stepped in for someone they are ideologically at odds with: Anarcho-capitalist professor

the christian nuts are fighting to have what they think should be done down our throats. The aclu is fighting fro what you think/want to be done. There is a difference.
