If you were comparing sizes of items between a 21" monitor and a 17" monitor...

When you set your resolution to 1600x1200 on a 21" monitor, what is a comparable resolution in terms of item size on a 17" monitor?

On this 21" monitor, 1600x1200 looks a LOT smaller than 1024x768 on a 17".

1280x960 on the 21" looks comparable.

does this seem right to you?

well u could figure it out mathematically.....(21x21)/(17x17) = 441/289 = 1.526, meaning it's 150% bigger
1024 * 768 = 786432 /289 = 2721

1280 * 960 = 1228800 / 441 = 2786
so they're close. u could cross multiply too so
786432/289 = x/441.
x = 786432 * 441 / 289
x = 1200057
divide 1200057 by one of the two dimensions (e.g. for 1280x960, choose either 1280 or 960)
1200057/1280 = 937 so it's close but not quiet right

EDIT: ok scratch all that. too much math for no reason. do this:

for calculating from 17inch monitor to 21 inch monitor
21inches/17inches = 1.23529....
now multiply that by your dimensions so:
1024 x 1.23529 = 1265
768 x 1.23529 = 948

pretty close

If E=MC2 and C is the . . . You're right is too much math. But the first explanation seems more sensible since it compares the density of the pixels per area. Since they are close so the size will seem to be comparable. Although you have to assume the panel or monitor area is such, i.e square.
