If you were building a LAN Box.....

I'm a gamer and looking to build a PC for going to LANs and Tournaments and I'd like the help of you pro's.

What would recommend for:

1. AMD/Mobo combo
2. 256 Memory Type/Speed
3. Video Card
4. Case/Power Supply
5. Hard Drive

So far I'm considering:

1. AMD 1800/Epox 8KHA+
2. Dunno yet
3. Prob a GF3 Ti 200 flavor
4. Still looking
5. best 7200rpm 20-40gb drive i can find

What would you build if you had a grand to spend?

hmmm

1) good choice
2) CRUCIAL pc2100 DDR (HAS to be crucial)
3) GF3 definitely...(best one you can afford)
4) hmm..would you be planning on adding a handle or shoulder strap to it? you'd want something small...not sure if i have a great suggestion
5) IBM 60 GXP

1. Athlon XP w/ either Iwill XP333-R or some KT266A board.
2. At least 256mbs of PC2100 CL2.5 Crucial Ram
3. GeForce 3 Ti200 or Ti500 depending on your budget.
4. Enlight 7237 w/ at least 300 watt PSU.
5. IBM 40gig 60GXP or Maxtor D740X (I think that's the one).

I didn't check the pricing, but if you could, might wanna consider an aluminum case becuase of how light they are. Then you could mod it and put a strap or some handles on it to carry it around.

As for a case I think Tigerdirect is pretty darned unbeatable for price and usability. Mine and my brother's both came from them, and we haven't gotten a lemon yet PSU wise. As for LAN transportation, they make backpacks for whole systems to go in, (minus the monitor of course), so I'd look into one. Matter of fact...www.thinkgeek.com has them. Heck...http://www.thinkgeek.com/stuff/fun-stuff/37dc.shtml....there ya go. If ya don't have to have the MOST madcap mobo in the world, you can save a few bucks and get the ECS K7S5A. I have it, and it works great...just don't use any OCWorkbench BIOSes. ::Had to re-flash his machine every day for some stupid reason::

Here's a case to think about..39.99 plus shipping ain't bad for a case that supports a 1.4ghz T-bird.

I'd suggest a MATX system- lots smaller, easier to lug around. This box would be good, has a decent 300w psu and a mount for a rear 92mm exhaust fan, both unusual in Matx-

Fong Kai

Gigabyte, MSI and others make good SDR Micro boards, Aopen has the 761-based MK7A (getting hard to find) and Epox(EP-8KHM) and others have released DDR micro boards, only a few have arrived in the US.

No point in dragging around a case big enough to hold a bunch of empty expansion slots..... If you're concerned about power requirements, you could back off to a XP1600+, not much real performance diff, and cheaper, too... Or upgrade the PSU....

And you can't go wrong with Crucial memory, very good stuff.

How do you people have money to build machines solely deticated for LAN parties??
Man am I jealous. I have one machine that I use for everything and im on hear listening to people building computers deticated for LAN parties or a small file server or workstation.
I want money!

Haha,
Ben

Who said I had money? Besides, my recommendation was to build a computer for general use, and the just get the sling to transport it in. If you already have a computer, I'd just get the carrying sling for it, and lug it around. As for weight, big deal. If ya can't carry 30lbs around for a few minutes you need to be put on a SERIOUS work-out schedule, ya bum. 🙂

1: AMD XP 1800+ (unlocked)/Abit NV7m (uATX)
2: 2x Kingston PC2100 DIMMs 128mb each
3: Gainward GF3 Ti450 (a Ti200)
4. Lian Li PC-35 (really small and light)/Antec 300w PSU
5. Maxtor 7200RPM 40gb HDD
6. LiteOn 52x CD-ROM
7. Teac Floppy drive

Why are you guys recommending him to waste his money?

The BIGGEST monitor you will ever use at a LAN party is a 17". Assumming you play at max res of 1280x1024, why pay 170+ for a geforce 3?. He can get a gts-v for $70.

In terms of motherboard and CPU. Go as cheap as you can. There is no differencein game play between my 1600+ and my 850Mhz in my LAN box.

Here is what you should get:
ECS k7s5a-65
256 ddr-75
gtsv-70
sb live!-30
and other stuff
