If you were at a point in your life where you could pretty much go any direction

Well I'm possibly out of a job by the end of this week and it's really made me take a step back and ponder if I should use this time to pursue other paths in life but am looking for some suggestions as to what others would do. My other choice is to remain in the IT field and go back to school part time until I get a degree but wonder if I really want to stay in IT at all at times even though I'm probably better at this field then most others I might try (but can't really know unless I try them)

If you were to make a career change after working 10 years in one field, what would you choose and why?

I'm really open for anything since I have no idea what I'd want to go with.

I would do what I felt I needed to or wanted to do. I don't really make 'career decisions', I make life decisions. I have never cared much about jobs, careers, money, etc. I can't give you specifics because you're the only one that knows your heart and mind. If I wasn't focusing on teaching I'd probably be focused on writing, or acting, or some other similar creative endeavor.

i'm sort of in your position, except for the out of job part (although, the company isn't doing so well lately, so who knows).

I just hate my job and want out of the IT field. I'm planning on going back to school to get a degree. I still don't know exactly what I want to do, but I'm thinking English major, with plans to get into the publishing industry as an editor.

But, who knows. I haven't even talked to a college yet so...

I've always wanted to open a surf shop....and also carry snowboarding stuff during winter.

After x number of years in corporate america and in a suit it would be nice to hang out in T-shirt and shorts by the beach and sell bikinis to babes and have them try it on and you telling them that they look great.

Plus the 100% mark up on Billabong and Yaga T-shirt is a nice plus.

Man that's me pretty much.

I've been tossing around the idea of going back to school but don't even have an idea for what and a big part of me wants to get out of IT totally but it's kind of a hard decision since I've been in it for 10 years this year.

I guess I really need to do some "soul searching" and figure out what I want which is much harder to figure out than I would have thought. In the mean time I'm sure I'll be getting whatever other IT job I can to keep the bills paid but now my largest focus seems to be looking for what I want to do and how to accomplish that I suppose.

I would get a job walking around selling peanuts or beer at baseball games (in my case at the Phillies). Probably make next to nothing but if I had the money in the bank so it didn't matter that's what I'd do. Get to go to the game everynight, walk around get some exercise, meet some hotties, enjoy the nice weather, etc.

meet the hotties as in "hey, gimme a beer!"?

can't imagine too many women that would be interested in the guy who sells peanuts for a living.

You have to wear a shirt that says "I'm independently wealthy." on the front and "Ask me if I'm single" on the back.

i've been trying to find another IT job but the market in this area sucks. Plus my skills/knowledge isn't what it used to be. I had an interview for a tech support type job a few weeks ago and i could tell the interviewer was not impressed at all. looking at my resume, i understand because there's not much there.

I have the MCSA cert but fvck if i can remember how to do anything i learned when i got it. that was like 4 years ago and sicne then i've abrely done any work that used that knowledge. I'm ashamed to put it on my resume because i don't feel i deserve it anymore.

i also hate IT because there is so much to learn and so much i don't understand. its just too much and overwhelming to me.

I'd get in peak shape, go back to the air force and apply to be an OSI agent or Aerial Gunner. Or sign up for the Navy to become a SWCC.

i must have missed the part about money in the bank. yeah, i guess if you're already rich it wouldn't matter too much. but still, people are gonna be prejudiced about you anyway
just because thats what you're doing.
