if you were a college student... which laptop would you get?

I'm looking at the dells right now... it seems like they got rid of the 500m inspiron.

btw, i've never owned a laptop before.... so i don't know if a 7 pounder will be light on my back

what do you guys think? maybe the 600m? since it's only about 4 lbs. and thin. Hopefully it'll fit in my backpack.

Somthing old, clunky, and virtually worthless. Toss a modded wireless card on there, strap on a microphone and webcam and stream it back to the server in my apartment. And a nice optical mouse - you never know when you may have to lightning fast draw somthing that the webcam can't see very well 😛

Something with a long battery life and a reasonably light weight.
For security a notebook insurance policy (about $50 a year) and a Kensington lock.

I don't see a need for portability for a college student unless you live at home. There should be computers everywhere you need them except probably your dorm room 🙂

Personally, I would get a 12" powerbook. Main downside would be the lack of games, but in retrospect, I wasted a lot of tuition money due to getting addicted to games while in college - so a lack of games is also a potential upside for me.

I'm not saying that's what you should do, just answering the question posed in the topic.

i have a dell 600m. i love it. it's great. if i had the money i'd the the ibm thinkpad t40. that laptop is just amazing. i wish i could get one. on a side note, i think i have a 10% coupon somewhere. i do recommend very highly getting locks for the notebook.

for those wondering why, i live off campus, and i take all my notes with my notebook and use it to keep all my scheduling for my job. it also serves as a good way to keep everything in one place when i need to do work on campus on a project, instead of using a crappy campus computer.

I would get that Sharp with the Transmeta Crusoe. Smaller than a textbook and less than 1/2" thick.

The Acticus MM-10. Badass laptop. 😀

Anyway, if you really really need a laptop I'd get an ultra light. If you're really concerned with security then I'd get one of those shuttle XPC systems and lock it down.

something 5 pounds or less, wireless lan, NOT a compaq, and NOT one of those desktop replacements.

i'm very partial to sony vaios. i also like toshibas, HP, and dell

I am a college student, and I went with the iBook. It seems, at least to me, to hit that spot between features and weight (an important aspect, since you'll want to carry it home and to some classes).

Ibm T series. T22 or T23. A bit cheaper since they are only around a gig, but wonderful, stable, and HARDY. KILLER customer service. Get one off of ebay that has a warranty on it. I'm typing frm a like new T22 900mhz, that I got for $600 bucks w/ 2 and 3/4 years of on-site warranty left on it.

I'd buy a Powerbook.. if I ever buy a laptop, it'll be one of those..

I'll keep my desktop for gaming and stuff.

I'm personally looking for something compact and looks good 🙂 I'll be out in public with it, I'm not going to be doing hardcore gaming/coding on it, so I'll only need it to do a few things, and do them well. Namely, the Powerbook 12" 😀
