If you were 23, single, and had a great job...

... would you move 5 minutes from work even if the area wasn't the "most fun"? or would you move 45 minutes to work, where you have a larger commute, but know people?

EDIT: if I moved closer to work, I'd be living with a few people I work with, so I wouldn't know anyone, but I'd have housemates who I knew.

5 min, you make that drive every single day - you'll grow more tired of commuting than you will of visiting your friends frequently.

I'm at 30 mins in a similar situation. I would hate the area 5 min away from my work. The area I live in now is sooo much better.

5 min for sure. 45 mins in the car every morning? you would have to be a moron to pick that over 5 mins. what a waste of your time/life. if you want to see the people who live 40 minutes away, then drive out after work or on a weekend. its not like you see them every day anyway, so why would you pick your location because of that when you could make your life less stressful (driving a ton less), sleeping more, and saving more gas? this is a no brainer to me.

Unless I'm sleeping with those friend(s).... I'd go for the 5 minute drive... or the better living condition

I had a long commute like that not too long ago, sucked hard.

Don't even drive the 5min commute unless you have to... ride a bike.

Hell, you could just about go without a car if you're not that social.

I am a bit biased, I have had to drive 30-40 min to work each way for almost a year....

It sucks. However, I do it because I would rather do it than have my SO drive that. (we work on opp sides of town)

Live with people you DON'T work with, 5 minutes away from work. You'll make new friends close by, and those friends from 45 mins away can always visit.

hey there matt, hope all is well

anyway to answer your Q.. id rather the 5 minute commute. chances are you will keep your old friends, and make even more friends by moving. your life will more than likely change a lot and depending on the choices you make it could be better or worse. yea a pretty broad answer, but your details were pretty vague so thats what i say. :) take it EZ

I made an 80 minute commute to work every day for 6 months, wanted to die.

It'll be worth paying outrageous NYC apartment prices next year to have a life outside of work and commuter trains.

Me too.
Work is an every day thing. I live about 4 minutes away from work and I like it. No rush hour stress like everybody else I know.
And its a very nice neighborhood too.

5 minutes. When I was 23 I drove 3 hours total to work and school. It's a freaking nightmare, man.

Wow, at least this post didn't involve a girl. How many times have you posted asking questions similar to this?

that's a pretty tough choice.

I think i'd go with the 5 min commute. when i worked, i commuted 1.5 hours door to door and it freaking sucked. i did it for 2 years too. im actually pretty proud of that when i look back at it.

bottom line is, i wouldn't do it again.

Id pick the one that has the better living arrangement in terms of your comfortability and rent etc.

I don't know...I'm in that planning ahead stage (at 26) where I worry about my salary when I'm 45, married, and have a crappy job
