If you wanted to spy on a spouse that was cheating online...

...how would you do it? Which programs would you use? Etc...

Sorry for the lock. It's my understanding that discussions such as these were to be locked as they are instructing people into how to potentially break laws; not that necessarily the OP plans on breaking any laws. AFAIK, installing keyloggers, even on your own computer, in order to monitor others conversations without their knowledge that you are monitoring their conversations is illegal. If another moderator knows otherwise, or if someone who does know otherwise can point it out to the anandtech moderator account, then I'd have no problem with this thread being unlocked. Sorry - Anandtech Moderator DrPizza

If you already know the spouse is cheating, why do you need to spy? Just leave.
If you don't already know the spouse is cheating, you have no just cause for spying.

you think your wife's cheating online?

i hear keyloggers work... never used one, though, so i dunno how easy it is to use or spot.

Sub7 brings back good times. NetBus was a good one too. 😛

lol, I'm not married nor am I worried about anyone cheating on me, I was just curious what methods one would use. I would assume that keyloggers would probably be discovered by Anti-Spyware software so I was thinking of something like Sharkwire.

Almost right.

Usually, if you suspect your spouse is cheating... they are. But for some people, they need proof before they'll leave. Also, solid proof is a good thing to have in a divorce case.

The best tools to find out if your spouse is cheating are to get detailed billing for their cell phone, a key logger for the computer, and a real time GPS tracker for their car.

If you suspect the spouse is cheating in your own home, a hidden camera works wonders, but sound is even better, because you can pick up phone conversations as well. Video and sound is a hell of a piece of evidence to have when you go to court.

If you have total access to the computer, you can make exceptions in the AV program for the keylogger. Just turn off automatic updates for windows, though, because the malicious program removal tool will kill it. But be sure to regularly update the system at windows update and uncheack the MPR in critical updates.

Dammit, I should almost turn in my geek card for not thinking of this.

find a program that creates a video of the desktop (maybe fraps?) it just needs to be hidden off of the task bar and mini tray.

If he doesn't, she's gonna get half of his stuff in the divorce settlement

What about the legalities though?
Hacking into computers (if it belongs to her) is certainly a legal no, no.
I wouldn't think spying (video cam) on people in common areas of your own house as illegal. But bedrooms, bathrooms, guest rooms ect might be in some states.

Probably best to hire a pro (or cheaters - lol), then any incidental illegal activities is theirs to deal with...

BTW, let me clarify for the youngins here:

If it's a spouse, spy and get leverage for the divorce. If it's a GF, run away. If you suspect a GF is cheating, whether she is or not, you need to accept that you'll never be able to trust her. Spying on her will gain you nothing.

If you own the car, computer and house, or even own them jointly, you have every right to monitor those things.

Yup, else the judge will rape you with alimony payments.

No you don't. You get caught video taping people using your bathroom without their expressed written permission and your before a judge. If it's a child - see you in 20 to life.
Basically in most jurisdictions anywhere you have a reasonable expectation of privacy, nobody (not even the owner of the property) can video tape you.
I'm not a lawyer - but do yourself a favor and check with one before following a path of self destruction...

eblaster and spector pro ftmfw. do NOT cheap out and get the "FREE" or discounted garbage keylogger software. there is NO comparison to spectorsoft. you might consider it expensive, but it's a lot cheaper than paying for her room and board while the dumb bitch is banging some other douchebag.

that said, it won't mean squat in court unless you have her permission to do this. the only reason to do it is to confirm your suspicions. if confirmed, you need to take action immediately. NEVER let her know what you've found out. your best chance of minimizing her getting everything you own is to one up her from the get go, make sure she's always playing catch up. keep all emotion out of it.

check out dadsdivorce.com forums for more info and make sure you do a ton of research there.

Best tip I've ever read on dadsdivorce is on how to get a good divorce attorney. Go to the local courthouse and read up on divorce cases. find out which judge allowed the most dads to win, also find out what attorneys those dads had. you will find out it's only going to be like 3 or 4 attorneys, those are the ones you want. ask those attorneys about the judges at the courthouse. it's going to be an uphill battle, but if you do everything right your chances will be far greater than just opening up the yellow pages.

of course, this post was made for purely entertainment value.

I see no reason to vidcap a bathroom, but I can and will do so in my own damn bedroom if I have reason to.

Except juicy gossip and, if you're really lucky, her having the hot passionate sex the person taping couldn't give her.

In reality if you get to the point you need to worry about doing this...the trust is gone and it's time to move on /thread.

If it is a spouse chances are on this forum it's a wife, 9 times out of 10 she will still come out ahead in anything there is kids or property involved in. If she can deem you had spied she can use that against you as a reason she sought refuge outside the marriage.

If you need a divorce and you are 'clean' then get one...if you have had infidelities suck it up, it's not going to change the outcome as far as costs that much. If you are worried on child custody then it's a hard call, usually things get really dirty and just the kids lose.
