If you use your 'network' to get a potential job...

Is it still okay to call the hiring manager and see what's up? My friend got my resume in at his company, a place I'd like to get a job. The manager of the IS department looks it over and says it's good -- I have all the skills they are looking for, and my friend knows if he's getting smoke blown up his a$$, so he's pretty sure it was geniune.

However, from what he tells me is that Human Resources in that company takes a long time to get around to anything, so I am wondering if *I* call the hiring manager and say "Hey, I'm blalbhalbha, my friend gave you my resume, I was just wondering if anything happened with the position?"

Should I call at all, or should I phrase it differently? My friend gave me the guy's name and phone number but I'm not sure whether I should call lest it blow my chances or make them worse.

Thanks!

E-mail is generally the least intrusive way to ask about it (do NOT send the E-mail marked as high importance, if anything, mark it low importance). Phrase it in a way that you're re-confirming your interest in the company and express your excitement about the potential position. Don't insist that you hear back, just politely ask if he can keep you in the loop regarding the position.

If you suggest to call the manager... how would you phrase your question, in a "I want the job and I really kick ass but I'm not trying to piss you off" kind of way?

tell him what you told us. He is a human being also, not an automotan who hangs up at wrong answers.
