I have no problem supporting developers but turning a paid version into an add supported version crosses the line. I am perfectly OK with them releasing new versions for additional cost but not to gimp what I have. I don't expect my $1-$4 to support the product forever so at some point paying for an upgrade is expected but I will not support devs who gimp what I have already paid for.
This is pretty much where I am on this I guess. App prices are so cheap that it's absurd to think that you will get updates forever. For something I use heavily I have no issues buying it again every year or two. I'll even consider paying a subscription fee though given the choice I'd rather have a lifetime option. I happily paid $100 for Feedly's lifetime subscription for example as RSS is basically the center of my web use.
The people getting so indignant in the Tapatalk forum thread need to get a little perspective. We're talking about $3 here, that's a bottle of beer territory. Hardly worth writing multiple paragraphs about what you 'own' for having paid that $2.99.
I will admit though... Tapatalk has been utterly confusing in the last few months though, even after reading this thread AND their forum post I still don't know if the Pro version I have installed on all my devices is going to have ads, nor do I see any new option for me to purchase that would be ad-free (as is being suggested here). The suggestion to use the (presumably ad-infested) free version for the phone view is dumb, if they want to offer separate apps for phone and tablet they should just make you pay for both of them. SwiftKey did, and I had no issues paying for both there.
