seems like 480i works, but not 480p, do you think this could be because of the cable? I was just testing my new dvd player out, using the component jacks even though I havent gotten to the store yet to purchase real component cables.

They work for normal signals but they won't work for HDTV because the impedance is different IIRC.

You can also use normal composite cables in lieu of digital coax.

480p is basically the best DVDs can offer (480 progressive). 720p is HDTV as well.

You may want to watch leaving them connected to long as the imbalance in the impedence could cause damage that is not covered under any waranty.

Modern (good) 'composite' video and audio cable should be the correct impedance for both component video and digital audio. I believe the spec is 75 ohms.

Since 480p is still an analog signal, if it were a cable problem you should be getting some sort of picture, even if it's distorted. Most likely, your DVD player or TV is not sending or expecting the 480p signal. My money's on the DVD player.

Also, not to underestimate your intelligence, but there are TVs out there with component jacks, but they only support 480i. Make sure your TV supports 480p, because if it doesn't the signal can damage the set.

I'm using 3 yellow RCA video cables to connect my progressive scan DVD player to my HDTV monitor. Works fine.
