hmm... never heard of someone try to make a steal by punching at the ball. you try to slap the ball away not punch it.

um..you can't punch a basketball at all according to NBA rules. Some laker player did that during a loose ball situation. He punched it to his teammate and ref gave possession to the opposing team.

Shawn Kemp did it in the '96 finals against the backboard to keep rodman from rebounding it as well, and the bulls got the ball.

do you guys remember that game where the player pushed the other player in the back with ball (it was in this years playoffs)? the announcers were talking about it saying that it really wasn't a foul since the player with the ball didn't make direct contact with the player he 'pushed'....IIRC, the refs did not call anything on that, but it was a clear shove on the replay...

wonder how that one should be called???
