You mean what's jury duty about? I've never done it, but you basically sit as a member of a group who listens to a case against the defendant. Once both sides are done presenting the case, you decide what happens, based on the guidelines the judge gives you. It can take a day or months. It depends on the case.
The basic rule with any democracy is that as generations pass, they become less and less likely to truly appreciate what they have. So they shirk their duties as citizens in a representative democracy and end up posting threads like this.
To answer your question, both my parents have served (I have not been summoned yet in my lifetime) and both had cases that ended within the day.

It's pretty open actually. Every once in a while you'll hear about judges shaming people that don't go. Sometimes they'll be fined, arrested, or nothing could happen.
That's not the point though. It's your civic duty as an American to serve jury duty if you are called and you can. There are, of course, times when you just *can't* do it. You just need to tell the court why you can't and they'll send you on your way.
I have a similar problem. I got called for jury duty cause I didn't know that registering to vote also registers you for jury duty. The problem is, I'm a student at college. The courthouse is 3 hours away at home. I already postponed it 3 times since the date is always during school. Is there a set number of times you can postpone it or even better, get them to stop calling?

Your reasons for not wanting to report for jury duty aren't exactly compelling. You have an obligation - probably the only thing you'll ever have to do in your entire life in return for being a citizen - to serve if you are called. Don't you think you could manage to find out how to get there and show up? Or is it OK to enjoy all the benefits of living here without a shred of giving back?
