And or you own a computer with the processing power of an FX series processor, would you say it needs to be upgraded? If not, when do you think it should be? Maybe it depends, is it FX53+ are fast enough? FX55+? FX57+? How long do you think systems based around these processors should last for?

I'll bite...

Ive got an
FX53 on an ASUS A8V deluxe
1GB PC 3500
Geforce 6800GT 256MB AGP
2 74GB WD Raptors 10000rpms
which i will not upgrade until 2008.

As i understand it... The technology cycle was every 5 years, but a hardware cycle, (a purchased pc/laptop) its lifecycle is generally only 3 years based on warranty information.

Consider what you bought and when you bought it, and the longer of the 2 is the max lifecycle of your device, at that point you should upgrade. Which leads us to... If you buy top of the line when it comes out... 5 years to upgrade. If you buy mid to low grade (bargain) then upgrade in 3 years.
