I've seen a picture a couple years ago of a Tacoma that was put on a lift and ended up having the bed stay on the ground while the front went 6 feet in the air. The bottom frame rail folded up like a bendy straw.

Yea I remember that.

BUT... BUT... toyota is perfect... I guess these were frames made by a US auto maker by union workers for toyota... yea it has to be. ;)

Toyota trucks have always been revered for their rusting ability. It's a feature. I had a friend in college who had a early 90s 22RE, the fuel line loved to rust out on him and he would only replace a small section at a time. It was worrisome when there wasn't the smell of gas as you walked up to it since that meant that he was out of gas. :p

Thanks OP. Sent this article to my father-in-law, who owns a 98 Tacoma IIRC.

I heard about this issue a couple years ago, seems Toyota used some cheap recycled steel for their frames. Brilliant.

Most steel is recycled. Nothing wrong with using recycled steel

I thought everyone knew toyotas were rust mobiles. They may have improved it with newer models (its kind of hard to tell at this point), but as far as 90s era vehicles are concerned it always seemed apparent to me that american makers had figured out how to build a more rust proof vehicle then while the Japanese had not. Its also possible that many american cars just have imploded mechanically before they got to super rusty stage, but thats not the impressive I've gotten.

My state likes to dump metric shit tons of salt all over every winter so vehicles get eaten alive around here. We had to get rid of a perfectly fine running toyota corolla because we got tired of the brake and fuel lines rusting out all the time.
