If you own a Dropcam, get ready for Googles all seeing eye.

They are buying dropcam. First Nest, now Dropcam. So it looks like 2014 is gonna be like 1984.

For those who own Nest and or Dropcam products.

Obligatory

I wanted to get a dropcam but wasn't sure cause it murders your upload bandwidth for good quality video 24x7 (or whenever the camera is powered on). You cannot archive the footage locally, must be sent to their servers.

Now that Google/Nest owns them, I'm definitely out, do not need them seeing whats happening inside my house and serving me ads for that.

It would make it easier for them to send the firefighters to burn the books. Oh right, we aren't at that part yet. It will help to make sure you have your screens on, books burned.

They bought Nest? Missed that one. I like the Nest shit, but the reviews I've seen -- the ones I believe -- aren't that great when talking about durability.

Dropcam is indasting, but I'd be too paranoid about the camera being on when I don't want it to be... With Google owning it, I don't think it's paranoia anymore.

They have a pretty good foundation:

1. Google (resources)
2. Android (OS)
3. Nearby (upcoming)
4. Nest Thermostat
5. Nest Smoke Alarm
6. Dropcam network cameras (with cloud storage)
7. Dropcam Tab (motion sensor for windows, doors, and belongings)

Although given the security issues that have recently come to light in Android (malware, botnets, fake antivirus apps, backdoors, etc.), I would be more worried about having a Google-based smarthome system than an Apple-based smarthome system in my house.

More like for anyone who owns a smartphone. Just starting out with the legit stuff:

To the covert stuff:

To the shady stuff:

To the even more shady stuff:

To the illegal stuff:

The NSA can probably just push a button if they want to listen to a microphone stream from your cell phone while it's in your pocket. So 1984? We're already there, no tinfoil hats needed. Even if you don't carry a smartphone, the guy sitting next to you probably does. Along with network security cameras in stores & at intersections, police car license plate readers, and even facial scanning from photos:

Like it or not, it's already happening, and there's nothing we can do to stop it. Even if bills get approved to publicly stop them, they'll still do it in the background & just not tell anybody, just like they were doing before. That's reality. So meh. I hate to accept that, but hey, if you're already being watched, might as well take advantage of the technology available :awe:

I was thinking of buying my first security cam and Dropcam was at the top of my list. I'll have to take it off now. I'm sure they'll use it to show you ads based on facial recognition. Or otherwise discriminate.
