If YOU overclock, then how many of your FRIENDS overclock?

I was just thinking, I've got a few friends that have desktop PCs, one of whom I built his PC, another had a mutual friend of ours build his, and yet a third friend I know with a desktop PC, built his own, after having one that I assisted him in buildiing.

Friend #1 has an Athlon II X4 640 at stock. I don't think that I've ever really mentioned or suggested to him that he overclock. (I wasn't under the impression that the Athlon II chips would OC well, or that it would be worth it.)
Friend #2 has a Core2Quad at stock. His, would probably OC, but he needs it to be reliable, besides performing in games. (I tried to set him up with a Sandy i3 rig, and he would have only had to pay for the video card, a 750ti, but he balked at that.)
Friend #3 has an AMD FM2 APU, that has an unlocked multi, but no way to read the temps in Linux. He's basically afraid of overclocking, so I haven't pushed the issue. Nor does he play games, so he doesn't need performance anyways.

I would consider Friend #3 an enthusiast, since he learned how to build PCs, and then build his own, when it came time for a new one. Friend #2 is a semi-enthusiast, since he kind of knows how a PC works, generally. Friend #1, doesn't really care how his PC works, as long as it does work, which he tends to depend on me for. (Annoying, when I get calls in the middle of the night when his internet goes out. Though he's been a bit better lately about that sort of thing.)

I did have Friend #1 build a PC for his GF at my place, using parts I supplied, and it went well, he had no trouble building it. But, he claims he's forgotten how. I guess that's how much he cares to learn about these things.

So, do YOU have any "enthusiast" friends, with desktop PCs? Any of them turn into overclockers? Did you help them (teach them building PCs, overclocking, etc.)?

No. Doesn't matter how much cool stuff I do. They are not techies and cannot turn them on to the habit. Now, I took a Cyber Security class this summer and have a whole lot of new contacts. However, even they are not that interested on the hardware end of things. I'm a hardware guy. It is my thing.

None, the only people I've ever known that overclocked were either shitbags or rtards, so I never considered them 'friends'. Every friend I have barely understands how the black magic box works, much less anything approaching overclocking. I'm basically Gandalf to them.

Not many of my friends have PC's anymore. Those that do have them all overclock though :)

I'm the only one I know who knows anything about overclocking. Used to have an employee who was a gamer. I built an FX-8320 system for him back then. He was essentially afraid to overclock it. Might "asplode"...

I only overclock my own stuff.

I will not overclock anyone else's computer.

They tend to blame any problem on the overclock.

So I just don't do it anymore, except for myself.

Out of my friends, three of them overclock and out of those three I think only one has overclocked his graphics card. Air Force comm squadrons are full of "nerds" so it's not hard to find someone who at least has dabbled in overclocking.

Every word of THIS.

Years and years ago when we were still overclocking with mobo jumpers and connecting traces on CPU's with pencils(gotta love those old durons) I OC'ed my brothers computer for him, as he wanted it faster but didnt want to pay more. Every single time he had a issue he called me and blamed the overclock, in 99% of the issues i traced it back to a virus/trojan he downloaded. Once the HDD died. 0% of the time was it the mild under 10% OC i had on his CPU...

But after that i never OC'ed anyone elses computer ever, not worth the hassle.

And none of my friends know how to overclock, im actually pretty sure none of them even know how to get into the BIOS.

I remember doing the pencil trick with an Athlon 1600+ Palomino. Doing so allowed me to OC it from 1.4Ghz to 1.8Ghz. I got an AGOIA stepping and bought it just for that reason. Memories...

I had an XP 1800+ (PR rating) Thoroughbred A, in an MSI KT400(A?). It was one of the first mobos to support AGP 8x, and DDR400. It was actually really stable (rare for an AMD-VIA combo), but didn't support PCI bus parking, so I complained pretty loudly when I got it.

I could OC it to a 2000+ or 2200+ rating, as shown by the BIOS. It only allowed a 0.05v overvolt, and the difference between the factory-stock chips of the higher speeds was 0.1v, so I was never able to fully OC with that board. (It supported the higher-voltage chips out of the box, automatically.)

Heh, I dont like laptops much, I have one, but compared to my desktop pc is it lazy :). And its laptop with core i7.
Desktop is better for upgrading, home repair, cleaning.

I overclock, so I obviously have no friends.

Heh

Nah. Everybody uses laptops now. My friends know what overclocking is, but it's not a priority for any of them. And you do have to go pretty far out of your way to do it these days.

A lot of them did it back in "the day" but they got old, got jobs, got kids, and got boats.

I have a bunch of friends that could troubleshoot a persons PC if it had issues, put together a system from scratch, but overclocking scares them. 1 guy tried overclocking through software once before but wouldn't ever touch BIOS.

I don't know anyone in real life who overclocks. None of my friends builds or tinkers with computers. If it doesn't work they go to the store and buy a new one.

One is asking for trouble overclocking the PC's of non-techie friends for exactly this reason.

One of my friends used to blame me every time he had an issue, or even things that he thought were issues, but really weren't, just because I built the PC for him years ago. Overclocking would have had nothing to do with it.
