If you overclock and would buy refurbished, the 1800XL is now the price/performance king, not the 7800GT

This card stock is just below a 7800GT. However, the X1800XL OCs within seconds with no voltage upping to 650/1600 in many cases, not only smoking any OCed 7800GT but also beating the 7800GTx.

Refurbed for $299, the AIW version at $319 refurbed, you can't get any refurbed 7800GTs, even if your could, the 1800XL right now is the winner if you care to risk OCing and don't mind getting refurbed.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that buying a refurbed card with hopes of overclocking it a lot is a recipe for dismay. I've heard many horror stories about newegg refurbs over the years...

I tend to stay away from refurbed anything unless it's dirt cheap. 299.00, to me, is quite a lot more expensive than dirt for a used (and possibly abused) graphics card. I was looking at one of those refurbed X800GTO's. $99.00.

At any rate, it's still more expensive than a brand new 7800GT. So why would you?

the connect 3d x1800xl was $315 a while back and i've OC'ed it to XT levels. That's some powerful piff, why pay $15 less for a card somebody probably returned because it DID NOT oc well?

Most refurbs are the result of people not knowing how to install their graphics drivers among many other things. However it is more probable to get a bad egg if you buy refurb, but in most cases they perform just like new. For $299 on a X1800, I would consider that a great deal. Of course if it didn't work, then you would return it. I'd never buy a refurb that would say "All sales final".

Yeah, I tend to think that most refurbs are returns from people who's hardware was not compatible with the item, or they did not know enough to get the product to work.

As an example, I've purchased four refurbed 6200's from the egg, and all four softmodded. Three of them overclocked very well in addtion. The fourth one died before I even got to overclock it. I removed the HSF and there was practically no thermal grease. The HSF itself was burning hot, so I guess it overheated.

Still, a $299 refurbed X1800XL isn't that great of a price, IMO. You can get brand new 7800GTs for a bit cheaper.

And if you buy a brand like eVGA, get a sweet warranty.

$299 ---> refurb
$319 ---> Retail

I would pay an extra $20 for the card not to die....

I have to say that the 7800GT is still a better offer. IIRC, there was one for 280 not too long ago. I'm a fan of ATI, but in the market of the 7800GT, there is no competition.

Demoth I just find it hard to believe that X1800XL's memory would overclock 60%, especially without extreme cooling and voltage mods. X1800XL has an inferior cooler than X1800XT to begin with as well.

IF you overclock...
IF you buy refurb'ed stuff...
IF you get lucky with a good OC'er...

Why not get a new 7800GT for less and not worry about the "ifs?"

anything can be the best if u put enough restrictions on it

if you drive fast, and would buy second hand, and you buy a car with less than 100Bhp, and no PAS, and no airbags, and 1 seat then my home brew kit car is the best for you.
