If you moved on from 5760 x 1080, where would you go?

Money is an object. Just curious about people's thoughts on different resolutions & which is "optimal."

I suppose question could just as easily read: "What will your next monitor upgrade be?" or something of the sort.

I could not move on from 5760x1080 because I don't believe I would ever go there.

I used to have 3x24" 1080 monitors for eyefinity, but I found eyefinity a little clunky and I didn't have the GPU horsepower to support it (single 5850 at the time)

Then I picked up a Sony FW900 and that was just plain amazing. Used that along side a single 24" 1920x1200 MVA display. Eventually the FW900 was just too heavy and too much of a hassle. I picked up a Catleap 2B and fell in love with 2560x1440. Pretty much had no more reason to have multiple monitors anymore.

I run 2x 1080p at work.

I would love to get three or four fullHD projectors, mount them vertically and do some seamless projection at 3240/4320x1920 onto a ~4-5ft diagonal (smaller means cheaper, less heat-generating projectors)

Currently I'm at 3760x1600 which is pretty good, given the size, and I'd probably hop onto an upscaled 3440x1440 if one ever shows up. Something like a 40-44" 5040x2160 for example.

Unless you have very specific needs (for simulations?) I don't think going much wider than 21:9 is currently very helpful.
With multiple viewports this might be more interesting in the future, but currently most engines only allow a single viewport, so a single flat surface of relatively square (compared to the overall field of vision) proportions is best suited for immersive rendering.

ASUS ROG Swift PG278Q, 2560x1440@144Hz + G-Sync or ULMB is #1 on my list, although I'm still waiting to see how other G-Sync units play out.

21:9 monitor would be very enticing, but as there are no 120+Hz options in that format that I know of, that kind of rules it out as an option for me

Really, my "ideal" triple monitor setup would be the Swift for gaming, then have flanking IPS and VA for work and video playback respectively, although I just use my plasma for video.

Also running 3760x1600, although have done 4960x1600 before (2560x1600 and 2 flanking 1200x1600). About to receive a second 2560x1600, so will see how 2x 2560x1600 is in comparison.

For work, I haven't been able to go back to less than 1600 vertical pixels. As far as configurations, I do like having a single main focus, which is possible with either one or two 1200x1600 displays along with a single 2560x1600. I suppose I will find out how two 2560x1600 stacks up. Still anticipate using one as a "main" display, and fortunately I have enough desk space to arrange/add if necessary.

Eyefinity is extremely clunky. I want to move on from it, ideally to 4K but I feel like its just not there at the price point yet. Next best would be 3440x1440, with a very nice offering from LG but at a price point that's too high for my needs. Same with 2560 x 1600. 2560 x 1440 looks good too but feels like a waste when I can hold on to an already good system for another year or so and then buy 4k.

It's a shame that 20" 1600x1200 screens have died 2 years ago. I should have gotten two instead of one :-/
Maybe I'll be able to find a little used one on ebay some day. Or, indeed, add a second 30" screen, but as you point out, having a bar down the middle of your workspace can be irritating.

On my game system I need at LEAST 1600x1200 so I can play older titles.

On my office machine I could do almost anything. I think dual 1920x1080 would be acceptable, if I felt like going in that direction.

I did exactly this, moved away from eyefinity/surround setup with 3x1920x1200 screens to a single 1080p 144hz screen. Then from there I went to the ROG swift 1440p@144hz with gsync. Every upgrade has been worth it, frame rate, lack of blur and removal of stutter matters a lot more than peripheral vision IMO.

Based on my experience with eyefinity I would tend to agree with this, but I'm weary about going from 3 x 1080p to just 1 x 1080p, even if it were a 144hz gsync monitor. The ROG swift looks great, but I have amd gpus and am not looking to upgrade those at the moment. I want to wait until gsync is more mainstream and until freesync comes out before I invest in one of those two options. The jump from my 2 x 7970s to something like 2 x 970s or 980s would be a huge improvement obviously, but I find that I don't really need that much power just yet. (e.g. Middle Earth: SoM runs maxed and doesn't crossfire yet). Also, the cost of the swift is quite high. I have 3 PA238QR from Asus monitors, and I assume I'd get a half-decent resale on each of them, but even so just not sure.

For me, i think the ideal would be a single monitor that provided a high field of view, like the LG34UM95 @ 3440 x 1440. $1300 in Canada though, so no dice. The cost of high resolution monitors is still too high in my mind.

Maybe I'll just wait. I may be able to sell my 2 x 7970s and 3 x PA238QR for ~$800 in a few months, replacing those with a single monitor and probably just a single high-end gpu - whatever is ruling the roost at the time.

I had a horrible time on 2x7970's on my eyefinity setup, but I had them on a 5970 before that and it was OK although it lacked the performance to really do it in many games. The triple monitor setup actually become awesome once I got the 2x 680's, surround was quite clearly better than eyefinity in setup/Windows and general use and it handled none surround games more easily without so much messing with settings. It still wasn't fast enough to really use it a lot but it was fine in the games it worked in. What happened was I noticed a lot of games were not supporting it, the list of new games coming out where I could use it had dropped dramatically last year and so I started to look for an alternative which is how I ended up on 3D vision/144hz. Having tried 144hz and immediately known that was my way to go when gsync arrived I knew I had to have the ROG swift and I am not disappointed. I understand why you are waiting, based on the way AMD has treated me and other customers it astounds me people still buy and keep their cards, the lies the deceit and their lack of standing by their products or even taking account of bugs and fixing them. AMD still has a white snow bug in Arma 2 that has been there since release, its a bum deal.

So your sticking with your current hardware and you like ultra wide I would say stick to what you have, we are meant to learn about Freesync next month anyway and supposedly its releasing in January so its not a long wait to see if its everything gsync is but for AMD. My reasons for switching was that I just didn't use the surround mode enough to warrant it, that was mainly due to the game support and sometimes performance.

I'd wait for 4K and then starting putting together a new display system. I've got 3x24" over 3x30" and it's awesome, but I'm ready for 4K.

right now id go something 1440 for gaming and a 2nd monitor for browsing. Im ready for 4k or 5k. that new apple display looks nice. anywho I still need a 2nd monitor for netflix/prime/browsing. So it depends on what hardware id need and what fps id get.

I rarely have my CCC 3rd monitor preset enabled. Since im playing league of legends again I have to disable crossfire or artifacts happen.

I'm at 5760x1200 right now (Dell u2412 flanked by 2x NEC LCD2490WUxi touchscreens) and loving it. I don't have any desire to go higher res right now because 1) I've gotten too cheap to buy gfx cards cutting edge enough to support surround gaming at anything higher and 2) Desktop app res support being what it is, I don't want to go any smaller on the text for my aging eyes (24" @ 3-4 ft is hard enough) 🙂

One thing I definitely don't want is to go down in terms of vertical pixels. I had a pair of 1080p 24"s at work and it drove me nuts feeling like I was "squished" on vertical real estate. I guess they're fine for gaming or movie watching, but for productivity? not for me...
