Lap.

Loose? Not really. The retention clip will compensate for it.

OK, and why should I use a lower paper first?

Lower number grit = rougher.

Start with rough & work your way up to smooth.

You can lap in a lab,but you cant lap your lab.😉

and why not start just with the smoothest there is? Just wondering 🙂

Heatsinks that need lapping generally have surfaces that are not flat in addition to being rough. The surface is usually concave - a rough grit paper will produce a flat surface quickly, then you can smooth the surface with a fine grit. Doing the entire lapping process with only fine sandpaper would probably take a few days.😉

And it won't be loose on the processor unless you do sand it for a day or two, with really rough sandpaper.🙂

Yeah, you could not remove enough of the h/s by lapping to make it a loose fit...even if you tried. You would get bored first.
