5-28-2004 Drivers Hit by Gauge-Gumming Gasoline

NEW ORLEANS - Just before the heavy-driving Memorial Day weekend, Shell Oil has stopped the sale of gasoline at more than 500 of its stations in the South because of high levels of sulfur that can damage vehicle fuel gauges and make an empty tank appear full.

The damage done by the bad gasoline could cause some drivers to run out of gas unexpectedly. Also, car owners may have to replace their fuel gauges ? a repair job that can easily cost $400 to $600.

The tainted gasoline originated at the Motiva Enterprises refinery in Norco, La., according to Shell. Motiva is the refining arm of Shell in the East and South.

As of Friday, 119 Shell and Texaco stations were closed in the New Orleans area, and 400 were not selling fuel in Florida, said Shell spokeswoman Helen Bow. (Shell owns the Texaco brand.)

Gas tanks have a float ball that rises and falls with the fuel level. An electrical system reads the float ball's level and transmits the information to the dashboard fuel gauge. The system uses silver electrical contacts, which can be quickly corroded by sulfur.

The problem came to light this week after drivers began complaining about inaccurate fuel gauge readings.

In addition to the New Orleans area, problem fuel turned up in shipments to Miami, Tampa, Sarasota and Fort Lauderdale, Shell said.

Shell is replacing the gasoline at its stations. But Bow did not have an estimate of when all the stations would be pumping again.

Shell said it had received 1,800 queries and 825 claims from people who said their fuel gauges had been affected.

Guy Valvis, owner of an auto repair shop in Metairie, said he normally handles about two gauge replacements a year. "I've fixed three or four here in the last week, and I've got two in here right now," he said Friday.

Valvis said the repair job entails draining the fuel and removing the gas tank.

Edit: This appears to be affecting entire Southeast region from Kentucky to Louisiana.

The Oil Corp, Mainstream News and Government are keeping this under wraps probably until after the Memorial Day Holiday.

Last Sunday I went to a Shell and put 5 or so gallons in my tank in Sarasota for the drive up to gainesville (about a 3 hour drive). I was nearing empty an hour before gainesville (my volvo is a gass gussler 🙁) and filled up. Everything seems to work fine. Are bad signs immediately noticeable, or do they come up after a while?

It would take time, but probably not very much time.

If in question, use up the remaining fuel as fast as you can and refuel.

Oh great. That can't help gas prices when they have to start shelling out for lawsuit settlements.

Looks like this bad Gas has made it beyond just New Orleans and Florida. Some folks on here both in OT and P&N are reporting incidents in Kentucky and South Carolina now.

Why does the article keep saying "guages" need to be replaced?

Its the sending unit that is affected, not the guage in the dash.

Average joe-bob louisiana is too slow to figure out what a sending unit is. 😉

FVCK SHELL!

I know they will pay for the repairs, but i dont have the $600 to lay out for it. WTF am i supposed to do?

🙁

Your sending unit is fubared.

You should not have to "shell" out $600 first.

Just like the Firestone Tire situation, the Government will have to step in on this.

I just called to cancel my Shell card. Fvck those bastards.... When i spoke to someone at CS, they said they would call back on tuesday with info on what their going to do.

They are going to lose so many long time customers because of this, they just shot themselves in the foot.

My $150/month is going to another company....

EDIT: Just spoke to my dad, his car is fvked up too. He filled up on monday, so i wonder how far back this goes.... 🙁

I saw this today on the news when I woke up, I didn;t think it was this bad.

And yea it is not a easy job for most cars/trucks to fix this problem. Also on SOME cars/truck the fuel meter in the gas tank is built into the fuel pump container so some cars/trucks will need new fuel pumps also, and some vehicles that are new you mgith not be able to JUST get the sending unit.

This is going to cost some serious $$$ to shell / Texaco

EDIT.

Juts thought abut this. How are they going to decide WHO gets the fix and not. Will you have to have proof or is ANYBODY that juts sends in a bill going to get paid. This si NOT going to be good. I can see a lot of smammers doing some BS that makes shell / texaco treat GOOD people bad.

I believe it is a week's worth of Production. Of course there will have to be major investigation into this.

So far this is being kept "under the rug" by the Oil Corp, Media and Government as much as possible.

Maybe until after the Memorial Day Weekend.

So predictable now, so sad 🙁

Update:

I was contacted by shell this afternoon and was told i would have to get TWO estimates and sign a waiver of liability to get my car fixed.

HELL NO.

They still dont even know what other damage may come from this. Also, if i get it fixed somewhere else, i can void my warranty. Also called my dealer to see if they would fix it, they said no.

Local news station is doing an investigative report at 5pm tonight, they mentioned the attorney general of florida is getting involved. I can't believe this bullsh!t.

BTW, i filled up again the other day and have driven 235miles since....My gauge shows im still full 🙁
