5-28-2004 Drivers Hit by Gauge-Gumming Gasoline

NEW ORLEANS - Just before the heavy-driving Memorial Day weekend, Shell Oil has stopped the sale of gasoline at more than 500 of its stations in the South because of high levels of sulfur that can damage vehicle fuel gauges and make an empty tank appear full.

The damage done by the bad gasoline could cause some drivers to run out of gas unexpectedly. Also, car owners may have to replace their fuel gauges ? a repair job that can easily cost $400 to $600.

The tainted gasoline originated at the Motiva Enterprises refinery in Norco, La., according to Shell. Motiva is the refining arm of Shell in the East and South.

As of Friday, 119 Shell and Texaco stations were closed in the New Orleans area, and 400 were not selling fuel in Florida, said Shell spokeswoman Helen Bow. (Shell owns the Texaco brand.)

Gas tanks have a float ball that rises and falls with the fuel level. An electrical system reads the float ball's level and transmits the information to the dashboard fuel gauge. The system uses silver electrical contacts, which can be quickly corroded by sulfur.

The problem came to light this week after drivers began complaining about inaccurate fuel gauge readings.

In addition to the New Orleans area, problem fuel turned up in shipments to Miami, Tampa, Sarasota and Fort Lauderdale, Shell said.

Shell is replacing the gasoline at its stations. But Bow did not have an estimate of when all the stations would be pumping again.

Shell said it had received 1,800 queries and 825 claims from people who said their fuel gauges had been affected.

Guy Valvis, owner of an auto repair shop in Metairie, said he normally handles about two gauge replacements a year. "I've fixed three or four here in the last week, and I've got two in here right now," he said Friday.

Valvis said the repair job entails draining the fuel and removing the gas tank.

Edit: Many States now affected (Kentucky, South Carolina) and other Gas distribution such as Marathon

Oil Corp, Mainstream News and Government keeping this under wraps probably until after Memeorial Day Holiday weekend.

Hope this doesn't make the price of gas go any higher.

Already hit us up here. Marathon, out of Ashland, had a batch of gas with high sulphur content. Hundreds of people were apparently affected. It damages some fuel sensor which makes the fuel gauge read near full when you've actually run out of gas! Some people were also reporting damaged fuel pumps (I guess from having the tank run down.)

That can't be good for the catalytic converter either.

Someone is going to be having a very long memorial day weekend fixing that problem.

If I recall right I believe there is an addictive that can help burn excess sulfer from Catalytic converters.

Shell has always had high sulfur content, and in the annals of hot rod history has been known to gum carbs up (not a sulfur issue, just a crappy gas issue). That said, I noticed about a week ago several times that I was behind cars that were reeking of sulfur. I of course thought, "haha, suckers bought Shell" .. didn't read about the problem until this thread though. Apparently some of the batch made it to SC as well.

High resistance at the sender would cause the guage to read high fuel level, and a complete open circuit would cause it to read full. A shorted sender would cause it to read empty all the time. That at least is how they work on Ford products. So it would appear the sulfur is coating over the sender element.

Who should pay for this? The distributors of gas. This is the Democratic position.

Of course, many Republicans would say, "take personality responsibility. You should test your own gas before you put in the tank. This is going to hurt business and people will lose their jobs. Rich peopl e like GWB will suffer and the trickle-down will stop."

Wow, Crimy I'm surprised, pleasantly of course.

Folks, this thing should be getting more Mainstream News Press and it is not. There are more reports of Gas Tank problems popping up all over the Southeast affecting who knows how many thousands of people.

That's the Political part of this, that the "Powers That Be" are doing all they can to keep this situation "under the rug" as much as they possibly can. Very much like the Firestone situation until so many people were killed that the Press had too much of a "headline Making" story to continue to ignore.

We have become so sad and pathetic as a people that I don't see how it can be called a "United" Country much longer.

I'm actually quite impressed.

The story is that a Shell refinery screwed up and let some high sulfur gas hit the market. Dave and infohawk have managed to twist and distort an otherwise simple story into a grand conspriacy and political statement. The skills they displayed are impressive. What they posted is useless tripe, but the dogged, blind and rabid partisnship they displayed in posting it is impressive nonetheless.

Moonie is still in the lead with his multiple accounts and replying to himself tactic but they are almost up there with him.

Troll

Read the posts by people. This is affecting many other States and other Gas chains.

Joke.

So gasoline is shipped from the state it is refined in to other states and sold to other outlets. That does not prove your government conspriacy theory in any way.

Try again Dave, that is, try again, if you want to continue looking foolish
