Microsoft Says your late.

"Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 will go out of support on April 8, 2014, if your organization has not started the migration to a modern PC, you are late. Based on historical customer deployment data, the average enterprise deployment can take 18 to 32 months from business case through full deployment. To ensure you remain on supported versions of Windows and Office, you should begin your planning and application testing immediately to ensure you deploy before end of support."

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/endofsupport.aspx

Other OS's

Mainstream-April 10, 2012
Extended-April 11, 2017

Just keeping those who didn't know updated, if you already knew all this, please don't flame me.

Most IT people will probably agree, but at the end of the day, it's a management decision. They'll wait till the last day then want it done by the end of week. :p

I'm pretty sure some enterprises still using XP are counting on the world ending in 2012 to get them out of having to upgrade.

I can actually see the point of those unwilling to upgrade from XP. In many ways, it is a very good OS, though Windows 7 is better.

XP never lets you down. There are still things that don't work on Windows 7 and don't work in compatibility mode. I have my ham radio stuff and I have a driver that Windows 7 will not accept.

We upgrade all of our counter and office computers to Win 7. The server is running Win Server 08.

I too had compatibility problems with Windows 7 when I first used it which is why i mostly use Windows XP for my work. I do like Windows 7 and I also like Windows XP. :)

That's 2 years away. I have three systems on Win7 and 1 on XP. The XP is my "go to" system for daily use because it has every app I need and great peripherals. I will change it to Win 7 when I replace the machine. It's a venerable P4 system, but extremely reliable.

i blame the developers on stuff like that. vista had lots of driver issues because the development wasnt done.

i have zero issues with my windows 7 box. love it. most of the reason i see people stuck on xp is either they dont have the budget for new machines (and money to make the crossover) that can run 7, or they have legacy apps that are xp only.

the hospital i interned at was in the second place...there is money to upgrade machines (gets done all the time(, but so many medical vendors have software stuck in XP and IE 7 and are in zero hurry to get to windows 7.

theyre finally about at a place where they HAVE to start to move to windows 7 testing, only because making the Dell optiplexes they have work with xp is becoming difficult, and making the laptops work with xp is damn near impossible sometimes.

Virtual machine, people - it's really not that scary. www.virtualbox.org.
Some apps are just never going to work on newer OS, this will always be a problem because not all apps are continuously updated. Virtual machines mostly solve that issue.

I can't use my SBLive because there aren't any good Win7 drivers for example. That's not going to make me stick with WinXP forever. lol.

It was smarter to keep a business running XP rather than Vista. Vista sucked, and it really did hinder workflow.

Since 7 has been around, it makes more sense to upgrade to Windows 7 than keep beating a dead horse with XP.

Would you rather wait for windows 8? Its right around the corner.

We're still rocking WinXP at work. The plan is that everyone will be running Win7 by 2014. Currently we only install (keep) it on stand-alone (non-domain) PCs. Everything else gets downgraded to WinXP. The thing is, by 2014, Win7 will be pretty old...

Indeed. Win7 is only scheduled to have a 10 year support cycle, so by the time you deploy it, it's only going to have 5 years left.

This thread makes me misty-eyed about XP. It almost makes me want to re-install it. Almost.

Except,

No TRIM for my SSD to keep running at an acceptable speed in XP.
No support for 8GB of RAM.
No support for AHCI and hotplug, without messing about with a physical floppy drive to install drivers, and even then it's hit or miss.

Yep, going to keep Windows 7 on here. :)

Only?. XP has spoiled everyone with roughly 13 years of support. Before that, most of them got killed after 5-8 years.

Considering that there are a large number of major institutions still using DOS based programs, I don't think XP is going anywhere soon.
