If you have Windows 2000 or XP -- DO NOT USE Western Digital Data Lifeguard Tools Diskette with New HD!!!!

thatsright

I have to re-install XP Pro cause of this Damn diskette. I just got off of the phone a while ago with WD Tech support and even the guy said NOT to use it if I have XP or W2K. And no where in the Retail Kit of my new WD 120G HD was this mentioned anywhere!

I formatted my new WD HD on Sunday using the Data Lifeguard diskette, and then I installed XP Pro onto the primary partition, BIG MISTAKE according to WD Tech Support. I am stunned that despite such a high quality product, support and service that something like this important could be overlooked?? I discovered why this was a problem when I had to boot into the XP recovery consol, and my drive was only recognized as one single drive, not the 4 different partitions that I created in the Data Lifeguard Utility. So that, and a corrupt IE6 install, are causing me to reinstall XP Pro (Yipeeeeeee). O' well at least I don't really have much on here anyway. I've only had the PC up and running for like 4 days.

Just wanted to warn Anybody/Everybody

Wait. How'd you get a corrupted IE6 install if you can't even boot to the drive? How did you install Windows if the partitions didn't even show up? Did you install the EZ-BIOS overlay that isn't needed with WinXP or with newer motherboards or controllers (although XP may not like larger drives during the installation routine)? Did tech support tell you exactly what was wrong? Did they explain why the website specifically lists the tools as being for use with XP (and the version is nearly 10 months old).

WinXP is well known for being very particular about partitions. It uses a different type of NTFS format from Win2k, uses a different kind of FAT32, et cetera.

I don't even see a reason to use anything but XP setup to create partitions, unless you want to use PartitionMagic or something to create special cluster sizes.

I used that software on my 180gig wd drive to make 3 partitions, but then i installed win98 first and win2k afterwards.
Why on earth wouldnt the software work with win2k/xp?

1. I used the DL Tools diskette first on my new drive, to create the partitions, and then I formatted them using the DL tools utility; formatting all 4 drives in FAT32 with 16K clusters. 2. Then when I got to the XP install screen, it asked if I wanted to delete the C drive, and then format it in NTFS, and I said yes. I did this and installed the O/S in NTFS on the C partition. 3. Once I was done with that, in the XP Pro Disk Management utility I converted the remaining 3 FAT32 partitions to NTFS in within XP Pro. Later on when I had to boot into the XP Recovery Consol, XP only saw one Single Partition, not the 4 that I created with the DL Tools, nor the 4 that I can see in Windows now. WD Tech Support also confirmed this problem can happen, and apparently did.

As for the IE6 Corruption, that was probably my fault alone, separate from any WD utility diskette. I hope I wasn't implying that the DL Tools caused the bum IE6. I think it?s due to me downloading and installing older copies of Microsoft Virtual Machine, and then Sun Java Web Start. This was done in a blind st*b in the dark attempt to get Java (Like remember back in the IE 5, and before then) working. Two sites I visited wouldn't load certain screens as I suspect it was lacking Java. One was a company Lotus Notes Web Browser, and the other was Microsoft Knowledge Base site.

[And for a thread-within-a-thread: Anyone know where/what I would need to get Lotus Notes Web email client to work in IE6? Do I need to download a special version of Java, or maybe a Lotus Applet?]

Hope this clears it all up Lord Evermore. BTW, LE you truly are a 'Lord' I see you everywhere in the ATF's. Thanks again.

Good question. I guess I thought that the WD stuff would be 'better' as it came with the drive and was from the same Co. as the drive. Well that was a painful lesson :disgust:

The most recent MS JavaVM version is: 5.0.0.3810, which should appear at MS Windows Update.

But VAILR: do you know if this supports the Lotus Notes 'iNotes Web Access,' Web Email client? As now, when I try to access our companies email site, I just get a blank screen and I think its because the SP1a removes all Java support. Thanks

I think this may have just been due to the back and forth activity with the partitions. WD formatting tools making the partitions, then WinXP Setup deleting one and making a new one, then Disk Management converting the other partitions. It isn't necessarily that WD's software shouldn't be used, it just has to be used with care. Preferably not used at all since XP's own stuff does everything you need.

I don't even have SP1a listed as an update. IE shows 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.030422-1633 as the version, with SP1 as the update level (along with several Qxxxxxx updates). Java works fine on my system.

Well I think somewhere along the line earlier this week in my desire to enable Java, which I thought I 'needed,' I downloaded a older and then newer, and then older ontop of newer versions. Yes I really had no idea what I was doing?? Now I'm pretty sure this would explain my Java/MS-VM/Corrupt IE6 problems, yet I think my HD partition problem is something totally independent of this altogether. Installing/Un-installing the different versions of Java/MS-VM thing I don't really see how this would cause irregularities with my partition information especially when I try to boot into the XP Recovery Consol and I see one Massive single partition, instead of the 4 I created.

I just got finished earlier this morning Installing XP Pro. And for the 1st time I used the Restore Point feature, saving a RP after every change, so I can go back in case I get any IE6 problems. I downloaded SP1a and did most of the Windows Updates EXCEPT the IE6 w/ SP1, as this basically reinstalls IE6 and I have a gut feeling this might cause my problems all over again.

And thats my $0.02
