If you have to grab the slide of a gun for self defense

If you're faced with having to redirect the barrel of a gun with your hand you have to grab the barrel and redirect it away from you and towards the inside of the opponent. If it's a semi-auto and the gun shoots, won't the slide action tear up your hand? If it's a revolver will squeezing on the cylinder help in preventing a shot from going off, or wedging your hand between the cocked hammer (if available) and the body?

What if you grab the slide but keep it racked back about half an inch or so? Then will it go off?

best bet is just punch the gunman's hand to redirect the gun, instead of touching the gun. Though, you'll probably be dead before you even notice someone with a gun is attacking you. Bullets travel far and fast. The point of a gun is being able to kill from distance, they wont go right up to you with it. Guns are overpowered, they need to nerf them and give melee characters a better chance.

probably wouldn't hurt you much

and yes, if you hold onto a cylinder of a revolver you can help prevent a shot

Your revolver scenario would tear up your hand badly. Mythbusters recently did a show on that. If its a semi auto, I'm guessing the force of the action is going to be stronger than you can hold onto and it will just slip out of your grip.

I swear a read an article that said the average distance from a police officer to the target is only 8 feet when an officer uses his weapon. Your arm is about 3 feet long, so you would have to take slightly over 1 step to get to the weapon before discharge.

depends on the firearm and the tolerances inside it. If the slide is not fully forward than the firearm will be out of battery to some degree, ideally tolerances should be tight enough to keep it from firing. Firing a weapon out of battery can cause a case failure, case failures are bad...

You're watching too many movies. If it's that close you use both hands on the wrist. You are not going to be able to keep the slide back, all I gotta do is move the weapon away from you somewhat if you grab a hold of the slide and it will close. Try holding the slide half open with two hands and nobody on the other end - that will make it clear.

I was watching this and it's a one handed technique that turns into a two handed one in the disarming phase.

That is terrible. I thought you have just recently got a handgun, you should know better. You cannot get trained by watching videos on the intarweb. You have to actually do it by repetition and instruction.

Dodge to your left, right forearm to the wrist as you bring your left hand across above the wrist. The weapon will fall out of their hand no matter what. This is all one motion.

It could hurt your hand a little but I'd imagine it's better than being shot.

I never got a gun and the video made me curious because it didn't seem entirely right to me. Am I not allowed to inquire? Chill out.

You've obviously read this some where as this is how you disarm an armed assailant.

You're forgetting that bad people almost never work alone. Where there is one gun, there are two.

You may beat the first one, you will not beat the second one.

Avoid getting into the situation in the first place and don't make yourself a target.
