If you have to drive 400 miles, when would you start?

night driving. Little traffic and lots of all-night diners to fill up the caffeine tank (my stomach).

400 miles is cake. I'd start it about 6.5 or 7 hours before I need to arrive...

Night is better though, I suppose.

I would start at night. I prefer the darkness anyhow, and for some reason I don't mind driving at night.

I like driving at night too, hardly anybody on the road. But you can't see cops easily, so I won't speed as much.

night, definitley. Cooler in the trunk full of bawls.

BTW, are you driving with a companion? even if you'll be doing all of the driving, driving with a companion is 100% easier unless it's really intersting highway (NYC)

I have a ~400 mile trip between my family and my apartment/college. I generally like to do it in the late evening, since the traffic is light and I usually want to go to sleep as soon as I get to my destination anyway.

If it's summer I prefer night driving. Nothing worse than having the sun beating down on you and the need to turn AC up the entire trip to keep yourself from frying! If it's winter I prefer day time :)

I do well with mornings and afternoons, but after 10:00PM I don't function so well. I usually plan leaving times so I miss any rush hour stuff in cities along the way. To each their own though.

This is the truth. I've made 5 or 6 trips of ~700 miles by myself... man that was rough. Once I did it with no radio, that sucked.

Definitely night. Less traffic, easier to feel the cars around you without effort (important when driving long distances), more relaxing with a good CD.

400 miles ain't squat, but I prefer night driving. Start at 2AM or so, so you get there at a good time of the morning, and only see a handful of other vehicles along the way.

I also like driving in the fog, or heavy snow, but not for hours, and not if there's a lot of other traffic.

I always do my long distance driving at night. When I drive between bay area and LA or SD, I start around 8 and be at the destination around 1 or 2. No traffic = Need for speed mode.

Driving in the country in the middle of the night with a fresh coat of snow is the most fun I've ever had in a car.

Morning time start for me. I like to see the sights along the way that I've not seen before. Maybe I'm just sheltered......

I prefer night driving as well, but I agree...the risk of animals is a lot higher.

So I like early evening...I drive 3 hours every 2 weeks and I try to leave around 5PM. That way I don't meet the late evening bugfest (I hate getting bugs off the car...)

I have fond memories merging onto the PA turnpike in Pittsburg completley ass sideways after a fresh snowfall. I know where you're coming from ;)

day driving. I'd be on the road just before break of dawn, you start with just enough light and by the time you're rolling you'll be there in 4.5 hours.

-edit- and at that distance, look at flying.

OP - it's not "can you handle it", you know what is the safer and faster course of action......daytime.
