If you have run flat tires do you really need a spare tire?

The purpose of Run Flats as thay you can keep going and deal with it when in safe place. Why would you need a spare? Mind you i'm not talking about the total destruction of the tire like in a blow out.

But just curious.

I have runflats and no spare and they have saved me already. In fact, I had no idea that the tire was flat. I assumed that the tire pressure monitoring was on the fritz because it was driving just fine on the freeway. But when I got on a side street I noticed a slight noise, so when I checked one tire at no pressure at all.

But blow outs are not that common, are they?

but they happen...my first flat was a blowout at highway speeds...luckily i drive a civic with tiny tires (14") so I didn't flip over SUV style or anything

not really. most cars that have run flats are high performance and don't carry a spare because it saves weight

i want to dump my spare... just have a really good tire repair kit w/ a small portable compressor. but you know what? when I had my camry.. the first time I had a flat... doing 70 on 495 to suddenly feel the back end drop... pulled over and the sidewall was blown out.

co-worker has an 04 vette with run flats...no spare (it would probably take up most of the 'trunk' if it had a spare)... not sure if he really shopped around, but the tires run about $400 each installed...

If you have a spare and run flats, it probably means you bought the run flats aftermarket. Why you would do that, I don't know, because run flats are stiffer, louder, and worsen handling.

maybe becuase you don't want your wife changing a tire or having to wait a few hours for AAA to come change a flat in a bad part of town???

I believe most cars if not all are designed with the spare tire as a safety device. It is part of the crumple zone when you get hit from behind. With out it the damage can be worse and insurance companies might not give you $ if it is missing.

Didn't think about that.
