"Expressive" implies range. Stepping on a cat's tail is a single note.

I fucking love the Pixies, but the Beatles are still a better band.
*were* a better band. They were great in the 60s, but the music they wrote does not compare to .. this:
Dylan's voice is actually pretty expressive if you really listen. It isn't pretty, but it's expressive.
uhm, yes?
Isn't Shane McGowan's voice expressive? Isn't Nick Cave's voice expressive? What about Wilson Pickett? Heck, Mark Knopfler has a great expressive voice, just listen to Private Investigations. I mean .. this list can go on forever. Bowie has a great voice. Iggy Pop. Tina Turner. Hell, just about every famous singer/songwriter has a great voice. if we gonna go down the "expressive" route, i think Julian Casablancas has the most expressive voice i know of.

See, Tina Turner can easily win this list if you say "who's the biggest belter in Rock", but Dylan doesn't really top anything, if not "most nasal". He did have some very unique lyrics back in a time where lyrics were a lot more straightforward, and that's why we are even entertaining him as a valid candidate for the Top 500 list.

.. having both studied classical music at santa cecilia and then modern music at berklee, i've come to understand that it's really hard to be objective when you say A is better than B, and .. it's also very difficult to then convince people that A is better than B. This because "good" automatically implies opinion based on taste, not on abstract objectivity. You can go on YouTube and look up some really shit Black Metal bands and there will be comment on the video "this is the best song in the world".

Weird Al's version is way better
you truly are a man of culture, you never cease to amaze me.

Like a Rolling Stone broke the 3 minute format, and allowed radio songs to stretch out. It paved the way for all the stuff after that wasn't 2.5 minute bubblegum pop.

Here's my preferred list....
  1. “Every Breath You Take”—The Police
  2. “With or Without You”—U2
  3. “Sweet Child O’ Mine”—Guns N’ Roses
  4. “Radio Ga Ga”—Queen
  5. “Smells Like Teen Spirit”—Nirvana
  6. “Eye of the Tiger”—Survivor
  7. “Open Arms”—Journey
  8. “Losing My Religion”—R.E.M.
  9. “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now”—Starship
  10. “Dancing in the Dark”—Bruce Springsteen
This list, it is horrible.

I looked briefly through their top 150 song choices, and that was enough to satisfy my curiosity of what they picked.

All I can say Rolling Stone isn't what it used to be.
Well, again, I have to remind you the list was made in 2003. So its possible they aint what they used to be for almost 20 years now. Taint new.

On my way to work, American Pie came on the radio and I realized that that should probably be #1 on this stupid list.

BTW, I agree with DigDog - the Pixies are fucking awesome. Second only to Nirvana (if I had started listening to the Pixies before Nirvana, they would be #1).

I simply did not like like/agree with what I saw with their "top" 150 songs regardless of when they published it (if it was published in 2003 or 2021). I know they aren't what they used to be (and it that was well before 2003 ;) ).

his songs were influential, but his musical ability is nowhere near the top

this is a ridiculous thing to say brianmanahan. do you know anything about folk music or about Dylan? His voice is absolutely perfect and, besides, it's a coached singing voice that he deployed specifically for his music. Dylan's musicality is also completely perfect. Really, within his genre, he's as musically gifted and perfect as anyone that as ever recorded a single note within their own genres.

Also, how many other Nobel Laureates are on this list? None? Just the one, then?

OK.

Honestly, you could put Dylan in the top 10 spots...and maybe we should. Now, I know that would be wrong and stupid, but that is certainly something I would do if I were put in charge of this list, which is why it is good that I am not in charge of such things. :D

(Tom Waits would round out spots 11-20...then maybe some Tiny Tim tunes)

i am totally gatekeeping weird al, if you were not a fan back when it was uncool to listen to weird al, you are not a TRUE fan today. I'm talking Another One Rides The Bus, Mr Frump In The Iron Lung, Nature Trail To Hell weird al.

i think his best days are behind him, but i really, really liked Poodle Hat. Hardware Store is a great song, well, the songs are all great, but .. not in a "weird al kind-of-way" ? Strong Zappa vibes in that album.

Zappa of course should be in the "top bestest music stuff people" list but it never is because he never sold out to the majors, so they had no reason to push him. In a way, Bowie suffered as well for being independent, although he did publish through the majors.

And in the end all these lists are based on which song was popular the most. Which made moar monis. There's a funny thing people do, when they buy something, they defend that purchase and alter their perception of the object they purchased. That, and the fact that you can "grow into" any song, as long as they push it long enough. So it doesn't matter how talented, original and creative were bands like Bauhaus, or Phish, or Toy Dolls, (or, god forbid, Iron Maiden) you're just never gonna see them on the list because the "best of" list isn't actually a "best of" list, it's a MADE MOAR MONY list.

i love weird al's version of american pie so much
I've read that Don McLean has accidentally sung Al's lyrics.

Yeah, you're clearly an objective judge :p
His voice and instrument abilities are a perfect fit for folk, if that's what you mean by "perfect". You can't blame people who "don't listen to hippie music" for not finding his voice/abilities perfect ;) Heck, I've played with a number of better guitarists, and none of them are famous.

How much money did the Velvet Underground make? They're on this list. Just as a "for instance".

Even 1 U2 song is too much U2.

this is funny but I have to disagree: U2 was awesome up and through the Joshua Tree 9Achtung Baby was pretty good, though). Joshua Tree is one of those all-time great albums. ....then you look at everything Brian Eno was responsible for. He had just come from producing 2 (3?) great Talking Head albums, to produce the Joshua Tree.
