If you have AT&T RoadRunner, which cable modem are you using?

I am using a 3com US robotics CMX modem. It came with the service and I like it a lot.

Why would you want to buy your own? It's worth that extra little cash to have it leased. In case something happens to it. Like a surge or something. It's replaced for free. If you wanted to use your own. It would cost you more money to get another one. I see it this way. If you or something burns it out. For any reason. They would replace it.

I signed up two weeks ago and am leasing a Toshiba PCX1100. I think leasing is better also. My reasoning is that within two years, I might be wanting to switch to some other internet service (like DSL) and don't want to be stuck with the cable modem.

See, The leasing works. Just make sure you keep that in mind. You are of course free to do anything you want.

I actually bought my modem, Toshiba PCX1100. After one year it'll pay itself off. Paid $150 for the modem and got first month free. I save $10 a month because I own the modem. The only thing that I am scared of is AT&T's service. They bought out mediaone and they can't keep roadrunner because it's a conflict of interest or something like that. AT&T has to keep the contract that mediaone had with roadrunner till the end of 2001 and then they have to dump it. Then we get AT&T @home crappy service. I actually had it before and it sucked. But they are telling me that by then you should have a choice on who you want to be your service provider. I'm not holding my breath on that one.

One more note is that the industry standardized the cable modems. Just get a modem that has the current DOCSIS standard.

I heard a rumor that they are replacing existing modems with new Toshiba brand modems.

These supposedly send back connection speed information.

They are probably going to start limiting connection speeds since many people connect way way faster than other people.
