And when you try running it in quicktime, it tells you that the required compressor could not be found,
what might you download to get around that?

 
If you have an AVI and can't find the decompressor, it might be DIVX or i263 (the two most common non-founds)
get divx here
Go to Google and search for i263 and you'll find the decompressor for that. I don't THINK it has anything to do with the fact it's quicktime.
If those two don't work, it's a different codec. Post here if they don't work.
 
Divx is an awsome codec that compresses video into extremely small files. Only catch is that it is very processer-dependent. Fun stuff.
