Weird, I have two Dell 600ms that I purchased in 2004 (one in February, one in October) and both batteries are not affected by the recall according to Dell's site.

edit: oops, be sure to input your PPID using "0" (zero) and not "O" (the letter "o") for all 0-like characters.

I read the article from a link on engadget (it was an NY Times article) and it said that the batteries were manufactured by Sony (which is already mentioned in this thread) and I realize that we have two Sonys in my house: mine, and my dad's. I also realized that mine does get pretty damn hot while recharging. So hot, that I could feel the heat on the other side of a 1 inch wood desk.

Got me thinking: that's pretty hot.

Anyways, I was wondering whether Sony will also release something regarding the batteries, or could I just get the replacements of Dell?

To check if your laptop is affected

1)Log into Dell's website
2)Click on My Account
3)Click on My Systems and Peripherals
4)Add your laptop to by entering the service tag (found on a sticker on the bottom)
5)Click on the link for that system and check the battery manufacturer. If it''s not Sony, you're all set.

Remove your battery and enter your PPID (serial number). As someone else pointed out remember to use zero 0 not the letter O

It's still useful to add your system's service tag because it shows how many days of warranty coverage your computer has left and the manufacturer of all the parts in it.

Previously, the Dell battery recall site (the one linked a few posts up) did not list my battery as needing replaced in the previous recall. My battery is a little over a year old and no longer held a charge.

IT IS INCLUDED IN THIS RECALL!!! The site must have been updated last night for new battery models. I go there and punch mine in this morning, and viola! a new battery! Awesome, I'm so glad I don't have to buy one.

I'd say it's premature to draw that conclusion. Frankly Sony is a much larger company than Dell, and it hardly seems reasonable to me that Dell would presume the batteries were safe. I imagine they did put them through a lot of testing, and didn't experience explosions or fires. Moreover, it sounds like only some batteries are affected, so it's unclear whether they could possibly have uncovered this through additional testing.

I will check my 700m tonight - the battery barely holds a 45 min. charge and now would be the perfect time to get a replacement.

That's crazy talk. Unless Dell designed the batteries and Sony manufactured them, it's not Dell's fault.

My 700m's 8 cell battery is a little over a year old and doesn't hold it's charge.

I was going to order a new battery off eBay for $50 + $20 shipping. Dell just saved me $70 and it couldn't have happened at a better time

This time don't leave the battery in it all the time when you have it plugged in. I understand that can greatly shorten the life of the battery. I only put the battery in it when I'm charging it or when I'm using it unplugged.
