.......If you had to buy a laptop today & were on a budget which would you do???? (I'll offer a couple suggestions to make it easier or you can run yours by me)...........

#1.) Just buy a new/cheap unit circa $700 & enjoy the 1 year warranty & be happy, end of story

or

#2.) Maybe buy an older laptop (though I see mostly Thinkpads & I'm a bit Thinkpad-gunshy at the moment) like an "A" or "T" series in the 21, 22, 23 variety (Pentium3) for circa $600 and just buy an extended warranty w/ on-site service??

Just curious as they both seem to amount to the same $$$, but offer a different approach to owning a laptop. TIA

I'm in a similar pickle right now. I'm considering either buying a mobile Athlon system for $800 - $50 rebate from Hewlett Packard (the laptop has a Radeon Mobility instead of that nasty Intel "extreme" graphics crud in most laptops from Dell). The other option I'm looking at is buying an 1150 or the like off of eBay new and sealed for around $850. Problem is this for me: the eBay route means paying between $55 and $65 just for shipping briging the laptop cost past $900, BUT I'd get it this week. If I go the route of buying the HP laptop from hp.com the estimated ship date is freaking July 21st! lol.....argh......... IF I were you I'd spend the extra $100 bucks and get something spanking new instead of a possible headache.
