If you had the choice to do something really amazing

would you?

Let's say you were offered the chance to travel the world for 5 years, but it means that you stand up right now and walk away from the computer without leaving a note, quitting your job, arranging for your rent/mortgage, etc. All relationships and legal responsibilities left behind. Would it be the same answer if the offer was to travel the universe, or travel in time, Doctor Who style?

Assuming that someone could take care of my unfinished business after I'm gone I'd have no problem getting up and traveling the world for 5 years. By unfinished business I mean stuff like get my house rented, pay my bills etc so when I return my life isn't all fucked up :p

i don't have a lot to lose so i would definitely do it. however, if i were married with kids and had a house, i wouldn't.

It would have to be more amazing than traveling the world for 5 years.

Like being in space for a month would probably do it.

EDIT: And this assumes that people know I'm leaving and my bills and such will be waiting for me to come back with no penalty.

All relationships and legal responsibilities left behind.

For me to do that, this opportunity better change the whole fucking world. And still wouldn't go anywhere without my wife.

What happens after the 5 years? Am I being chased by creditors? If so, no thanks. That would make for a miserable life when I got back.

Nope, that's the point; you would literally leave it all sitting. So if you couldn't do that and had to come back to a big legal and fiscal mess, you wouldn't go? Even if it meant incredible experiences, maybe things nobody else has ever seen?

Had an opportunity like this about a year ago now and turned it down.

I don't really regret my decision, my life is more important now than something I could probably still do years from now.

Nope, your edit does not apply. Stand up and walk away, leaving everything hanging. Would you or wouldn't you?

Yeah, pretty much. Plus the police inquiries related to you being a missing person, etc. So you'd skip seeing the world/universe because of the trouble after?

Yeah. I don't think the OP has kids.

No way I'm leaving my kids. No freakin' way.

Well TBH your scenario sounds like you're asking if someone is willing to completely abandon their life and everything about it. If you're abandoning your family or others that depend on you IMHO I don't care what your reasons are... it's a pretty terrible thing to do.

So to answer your question, no I wouldn't go if I was in for a shit storm of life when I came back.

No. Because travelling the world for 5 years is not "a choice to do something really amazing". Based on your criteria, anyone can just up and go, and leave behind everything to travel for 5 years if they so choose so really what is the offer? What's stopping me from getting up right now and travel the world for 5 years?

I would be a perfect candidate for this, I am young... no kids no career. All I have myself and I would still say no, I got school to attend to and missing out for that long could really mess things up in the long long run.
