What would you buy? Would you buy a 32" LCD over a 51" Projection? What are some features one should try and look for when TV shopping along with brands? Would a Projection last longer than a LCD used on a daily basis almost all day?

Not a option I just can't see giving more than $1000 for a TV. Even thats stretching it. I was just thinking of replacing my 8 year old 27" TV. So whatever I go with will be night and day difference. My main question is would a Projection TV outlast a LCD by alot? As you can see I will try to use the TV for as long as possible.

Wouldn't it be a better choice to wait for black friday and any possible holiday deals? There was a deal at frys.com, 37" lcd with hdmi for $800, now a dead deal.

I'd go with the 51" projection over the 32" LCD.

What kind of room will you be using this in? Is viewing angle an important factor?

Funny you ask--I just bought a 42" Panasonic plasma EDTV for $997+tax at HHGregg. I was very hesitant about not getting an HDTV at first, but after reading AVS Forum, I knew EDTV was the right choice, especially at that price!

Pimpin' my own thread

I'd buy a 200$ TV a 500$ computer and 300$ worth of beer. Actually I'm not even kidding that seems like the right split. Persoanlly I can't see why anyone would need a TV that costs more than 200$, or a computer that costs more than 500$, and once you have those 2 all you need is some beer to drink while you watch TV and play games...

EDIT: might use the 300$ to try to get women, but given past experience the beer would be a better investment...

I just bought a Hitachi 51F59 51 inch CRT Projection from Circuit City..pm'd to HH Gregg and got it for $888.00 with free delivery.

Wow...I've never had High Def, but this TV is incredible...great sound, lots of inputs, IT'S ON WHEELS...and the picture is fantastic. Even the non-high def channels look really good.

I got the directv HD-DVR installed on Saturday and it looks great and the OTA Channels look great.

Thing is less than 2 feet deep and once again ON WHEELS...

Here's description from the website

Hitachi 51" CRT Projection HDTV (51F59)

51" CRT projection HDTV: Get a hi-def picture for a great price with the Hitachi 51" CRT projection HDTV. A CRT (tube) projection television is one of the most affordable types of big-screen HDTVs. At only 21.9" deep, the 51F59 TV is much slimmer than most other CRT projection televisions, so it won't take up lots of space.

HDTV with tuner: The Hitachi 51" HDTV offers outstanding hi-def picture clarity (1080i) along with a built-in digital tuner (ATSC), so you can enjoy HDTV without having to buy an additional component.

The Olevia has better specs than both, and the Sceptre's seem to have reliability problems. The only thing the westy has going for it is you can get a 37" 1080P monitor.

I just picked this up, and it should be a nice replacement for my 27" Direct View...

Wow, I am in the exact same situation as you. This thread should be good.

I have a 27" and want to replace it for under $1000. I also can't see spending that much money on a TV.

Got to reading, is it true rear projection TV's lamps has a life of around 6-8,000 hours depending on brand and a LCD has 30-60,000 hours depending on brand? If true it sounds like the LCD might be the way to go because I also read a new lamp for a projection is around $400 give you take a hundred or two. But I take it a LCD backlight/lamp is hard or ain't replaceable?

I was in the same position as you last year. I had a 27" and wanted HDTV. I didn't have room for the bulk of a huge projection TV, and plasmas and LCDs were too expensive for me. I went with a Samsung slim 32" HDTV CRT. Basically, regular aspect programming is the same size as my 27", but of course I have HDTV now. I love the CRT.

I might just get a LCD since like I said I won't be able to get much help on moving a big TV if/when the time comes. I can pick a 32"/37" up and move it myself. My next question is what are some good brands? Does Panasonic or Polaroid make a good LCD?

The Syntax Olevia's are highly regarded on the AVS Forums...

Sharp makes good LCD's...but they are hella overpriced.

I haven't found a LCD yet, other than the Olevia with a 1600:1 contrast ratio...

You're correct, rear projections (and more specifically DLPs), have a lamp life of around 6-8,000 hours and replacements cost around $300. The lamp on an LCD cannot be replaced so after 30,000 hours it's done.

I recently bought a 50" Magnavox 720p DLP on eBay for $712, with a new lamp. Considering the amount that I saved over a comparable Plasma or LCD it was worth it to me. 6,000 hours would probably last me 3-4 years so the cost of a new bulb doesn't scare me.

Actually, most of the newer LCD's are rated at 60,000 hours. I think I'd be replacing my TV by the time 60k hours rolled around...

Also, it may not be something the average user could replace, but why couldn't you replace the backlight in the LCD?
