In August I'm going to have access to the 9 month CD that I put $10,000 in. Right now I'm paying for all my living expenses until November when I finish school and move back home for a little while (at least). I'm thinking about investing $5000 of it immediately in August when it becomes available. Any suggestions? Other than a bank CD I have no idea what to do with it...

How long-term? If less than several years just move the money to a high-interest savings account.

A good long-term investment for 3+ years would be an S&P 500 stock index mutual fund or ETF (exchange traded fund).

Agree w/ Dave.

There's an article on bankrate.com right now if you wanna read where the "experts" think interest rates are going......(in relation to CD's, MM and such).

I dunno............5% in a MM right now seems pretty logically sound to me, but there's always those that swear they can make 20% on their money all day, every day. ;)

Can you backup that guarantee with some $$$ of your own?

I bought 2k shares yesterday at 3.75. C-BASS to buy mortgage banking firm
C-BASS of New York will buy all of the outstanding common stock of Fieldstone for $5.53 per share in cash for a total of $259 million.
...
Completion of the transaction is expected to occur in the second quarter of this year.
Market overreacted yesterday on the subprimes.

You guys have to remember I have no idea about how to go about doing stuff like that..and I don't want to keep it somewhere for more than a couple years max. It's basically to motivate me to get my ass in gear when I get out of college...rather than spending it away being lazy.
