A professor at my university told me that he was thinking of getting a nice dual core laptop to replace his desktop, and his range is around $2500-$3000. I suggested the Lenovo T60/T60p series to him, but I am curious what other laptops are of high quality in this price range.

Must have a Dual Core CPU, and preferably 100G or larger HDD and Good video.

personally, I like ASUS laptops :)
So I would get a stylish and powerful and small and thin (or big and widescreen) ASUS laptop, with a dual core processor.

forgot the model name, but they have one that's going to come out that has a brushed metal finish for the wristpad, core duo (i think) and a bunch of other good stuff (of course). didn't see much of the specs, but I saw a picture of it!

I agree with you, I think he should get the T60.. Is he a HEAVY GAMER? Like he'll only be doing gaming? The T series laptops are suppose to have excellent battery life but the graphics aren't the highest end though.

I honestly doubt he will do much if any gaming at all. He's a bit on the older side ;) Even more honestly I have no clue why he is so keen on blowing that ammount of cash on a notebook, when he already has one the school supplies to all the professors. All I know is he stopped me and asked the question :) Thanks for the suggestions BTW everyone, I had completely forgotten about ASUS notebooks, and perhaps I'll tell him to wait and see what Dual Core Turions bring to the table before he spends his $.

A 2 GHz MacBook Pro (with Office 2004 for Mac, since he'll probably need it). Hey, he's in education, so at least some of his coworkers will probably use Macs too, and he'll have games like World of Warcraft and Doom 3 to tide him over. :)

If you use the $750 off coupon, you can get a fully equipped Dell E1705 for less than $3000!!!!!

I'd stick with the IBM. Dell's are put together like origami in comparison. IBM's are engineered to be strong, solid, and light. Dell's are engineered to be cheap. I don't have any longterm experience with ASUS laptops but I doubt they compare in build quality with IBM's. Now, if you want a thin and light gaming machine, the W3 series has fantastic specs. Still, if it's for a professor, I'd go with the IBM. If he had wanted a Mac, he would have asked which Mac to get.

That's not necessarily true. Many people don't ask about Macs because they forget that a Mac is an option. It's not always the right option, but sometimes it might make more sense. Certainly it would for someone who's tired of maintaining security software just to keep their system running.

If you go with Dell definitely check the deal sites. I got a 40% coupon from them last week. And the last laptop I bought from them was $750 off a $1500 laptop.
