If you had $3000 to buy a laptop what would you get? Only restrictions are that it has to be from the K-12 Education sections of any websites. And it has to be a large dealer such as Dell, Gateway, or IBM. And no coupons.

Then $3000 is way more than you need. They won't need the latest 128MB video card to play games. I'd go Dell.

I'd save the school a bundle and not spend it all just one laptop. I'd get 3 cheap laptops or save the money for more important school items.

But if you had to spend it all, my choice would depend on the use of the laptop. If it is likely going to take a beating, then get one of the toughbooks. If it won't be abused then a Dell Inspiron is my pick (600m or 8600 models). Definately get a Centrino - the long battery life and lack of burned laps are great benefits.

If I had $3000 for a laptop I wouldn't get a laptop - I'd get a tablet pc :) The Fujitsu-Siemens T 3010 here is an awesome piece of machinery.

Dell D800 or IBM T41 ;)

Depends on your size preference, they both have advantages over one another.

Id suggest an IBM T40p or an older generation 15" Powerbook (1ghz g4 w/superdrive) depending on which platform they are more comfortable with. Those are the best of the PC world and the best of the Mac world. Runners up might be the Dell D600/800, Compaq x1000, IBM x22, etc...
