I've been looking at vehicles a quite a bit latley. I'm in almost the exact same situation as you. Right now I'm really pushing for a Jeep Grand Cherokee 98 Limited edition. Fun to drive, powerful as hell (V8 engine), really nice interior, and the Jeep engines have a life expectency of at least 200,000 miles.

why dont you lease a car instead of buying it? you can get a nice car and use that 15k for the payments.

Don't buy new unless a relative works for one of the auto makers and can get you a discount. I'd buy a 1 or 2 year old car with low miles. You can find them anywhere. A 1 or 2 year old car has allready taken the depreciation hit and they are still under warranty. Also, you'd still have enough cash left over to blow on something else or save. My wife has a Pontiac Sunfire and I love to drive it instead of my truck. It is sporty looking, plenty of pep, maneuvers great, and has great gas mileage. My wife always gets irritated because I'm the one always popping in the drivers seat.

If you've got the time, go for a first gen camaro. the 69's looked pretty good, and you can get a fairly nice one for 15k, or pick one up for 3500 and fix it up yourself.

of course if you're not into buying premium gas and getting <15 miles to the gallon, this route would not be for you.

if you're looking for value, an old toyota mr2 can't be beat. we had an '88 that lasted us 200,000 miles, and would have gone much more, had we not sold it. It was a supercharged one, and it had a helluva lot of torque for a small car. you had to be careful on rainy days, or you'd sit and spin at stoplights. We sold it for about 3000. Anything toyota makes lasts forever.

Well I'm in the same boat, but my budget is closer to 10K than 15, however. I've been looking at these cars:

'96 Eagle Talon TSi AWD ~$14K
'93 Eagle Talon TSi AWD ~9.5K
'93 Toyota Celica GT4 ~9K
'95 Toyota Celica GTS ~8.5K
'98 Subaru Impreza 2.5RS ~12K
'95 Ford Mustang ~12K

Of those, the GT4 would be my first choice, the Celica second, the Impreza third and the stang if I found a good deal on one.

At your age by a car for $5k and invest the $10k. Sounds boring now but in five years you'll look back and know it was the best decision of your life! Of course you don't think that way now and so you probably wouldn't do it...but I guess thats what life is for: to learn your mistakes!

Mwilding- I agree I think it would be pretty dumb of me to buy a new car being a college kid w/no job. It is simply a topic, I was doin a little day-dreamin. It doesn't hurt to think about "What-ifs"

<< A nice Grand National or maybe a Porsche 944. >>

Good answer

<----Wants an '87 951(944 Turbo).

First car in the world to have dual airbags. It has passive restraints and ABS was standard.

217HP. 0-60=5.9 seconds, top speed 151mph.

Fast ass car that can be modded to higher speeds.

If you want a relatively new car, I would suggest you take a look at the Subaru Impreza 2.5RS.

SCORE!
