If you guys could do a federal law enforcement internship...

Which one would you choose and why? I have to decide on one this semester...FBI is out, they really don't do internships.

Im thinking Secret Service (I could do the white house if I REALLY wanted, although cost would be a huge factor), BATFE or as dabuddha mentioned, DEA.

ATF would probably be the most exciting. I get the impression that they're the most-liked Federal agency among local LEOs, since they're usually pretty street-smart & cooperate with all levels of LE.

That said, if you're looking to turn this into a career I'd be inclined to go with the Secret Service.

The only one i'd recommend not going with is US Marshal's office. I've talked to an agent, and he said all the interns do is push papers.

I have a friend who interned with the US Customs Service. He had a BLAST. Another that interned with the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in the Minnesota, (although not federal) and he had a blast as well.

FBI does do some sort of internship program... i know a guy that got in. i think they only take like 1 guy from each state or something though. anyways, he worked his ass off to get it.

Yea. FBI again isnt really an option because its so difficult. It's very rare that anybody would land an internship with them, so every advisor I have had said don't even bother...that and they probably push papers more than anything else. I'm looking to avoid that, although each internship probably has some.

We had some ATF guys speak one day in my crim class. They sold me.

I'd try them first, maybe Secret Service second. It would be nice if you could get an idea of what both would offer, that way if one just wants you to push papers and stuff envelopes you could avoid it.

Yea. I have a meeting with the internship director when I go back to school...if he cant answer my questions, he will give me numbers to contact the people that can. I realize that many interns push SOME paper, and thats fine...but I want to taste a little bit of everything.
