It depends. I would say it is unlikely with exceptions rather than the other way around. I had a similar situation once, but I had met the person in real life three or four times at various get togethers. He needed a few hundred bucks to get back home after an extended road trip with some people that he just wasn't getting along with. It all worked out just fine. I was extremely nervous about the whole situation, though.

However, we need more info. Is this person an online date or just a random friend? What are the circumstances under which you converse? Have you ever sent things back and forth?

I agree.

If you lend them the money, and they don't pay you back, well you spent $200 to realize that you have been wasting far too much time with this person, and don't have to anymore.

Or, they do pay you back, and have a truly trustworthy friend/other on your hands.

I say do it to find out which you have.

Just be careful if, after they pay you back, 2 weeks later they ask for $2,000!
