Does the trojan still have infectivity?

I was helping out my dad fix his computer and clean out some of the old files on his desktop and came across a weird looking zip file, and I extracted it without thinking...Avira AV instantly popped up like 4 warnings asking what to do with a potential trojan file. I selected delete and am now proceeding to run a full virus scan and clearing up caches with CCleaner and Disk Cleanup in Vista.

Didn't click on the trojan file. Am I considered relatively safe? Is a reformat in order?

You are most likely safe since it was caught before it could do any damage. After the full virus scan, do a scan with something else, like Spybot, just to make sure.
