... and sat him in the middle of nowhere with only water, would his body consume the fat keeping him alive until he was thin enough to move, or would he die of malnutrition first?

actually i thought of this...your body can run on fat + water = maybe?

it would be a great weight loss program though

You need certain vitamins/minerals and water but yes, the calories in the fat would keep him alive for a long time.

Medically controlled fasts of obese people is some ludicrous # of days, can't remembre off the top of my head

Something would come and eat him before we found out the answer.

I've read of a case study where morbidly obese fatties have been fasted under medical supervision for as much as a year. I have no idea on the details there. I'm sure you'd need some vitamins and mineral supplements at a minimum. You start doing the math on somebody who's got 200 or more pounds of fat hanging off their carcass, there's an assload of energy right there.

I think he would stay in place. I mean, if he's that fat that it's hard to walk, and he runs out of breath going up stairs, he isn't going to suddenly 'bake' into shape. Scorpions will get him though... so much surface area.

He could live several weeks on water while consuming his body fat. The danger would come when he started to eat again - after a fast you need to start with juice and gradually work your way up to more complex foods.

A certain proportion of the body's energy usage must come from carbs - if carbs aren't available, then the body will start degrading it's own protein to create carbs in order to make up the shortfall.

In the absence of food for more than a few weeks, even someone moderately fat, will die of malnutrition long before their fat is used up.

Similar elements, but quite dissimilar in terms of how it's arranged. Fat is basically chains of lipids, generally phospholipids.

Thanks, that makes things so much more clear.

Yeah, a morbidly obese person could not live long enough without food to the point they became skinny. They'd shed a decent amount of weight, but not necessarily a lot if they can't even move in the first place, so they wouldn't be requiring a lot of energy.

To keep someone like that in this situation alive long enough till they could move on their own, you'd have to at least give them something of substance each day, say some bread or crackers, mainly just so the body can get 'real' carbs.

I guess it's possible if he had vitamin and mineral supplements but he wouldn't have much muscle left after.

Die of malnutrition first.

Fat is only stored energy; your body can't survive on energy alone. Energy alone can't replenish cells and fuel all of your body's functions.
