IF you get into a car accident, but was falling asleep, are you considered a bad driver?

I've never fallen asleep and I make four hour drives every two months to and from college. That's the longest I've ever driven on a regular basis, never once fallen asleep. If I feel tired I get a red bull or coffee. Seems simple enough.

i haven't posted on anandtech in awhile, but its hard to get a little grace and understanding these days eh? All these techno-geek know it alls who think they know everything..from computers to life. Instead of pointless name-calling you can't discuss the topic at hand huh???? I hope you hyprocrites, (had to say it), are saying these things without ever gone on the streets sleepy, faded, or drunk. Obviously, the people who are calling me such things are perfect drivers without any accidents or tickets. If you fit any description ive mentioned, who's to say you arent the moron? that accident you had could have also been the end of someones life. that time you drank a bit and drove home could have hurt somebody. that speeding ticket you got might have prevented you from running someone over. Or if you want to join my boat, that one time you fell asleep could indeed be the time when you get into an accident.

You guys are making me out to be some sort of freaking criminal who shouldn't be on the road. I've honestly had one minor accident on the freeway(when i fell asleep) and another backing out in the school parking lot. I'm humble enough to share it knowing what kind of people lurk anandtech. Where are all the cool, understanding people who offer advice and arent so brash.

This sleeping thing is recent and that is why i am wanting to know what i can do to stop it. The bus idea was actually really good, just the manner in which it was presented sucked. anyways, thanks for the people who have been helpful.

Listerine breath strips. I'm not kidding. Keep a bunch in your car, and when you start to feel sleepy, eat like 3 of them. It works, I promise.

Yes, especially when you're putting yourself and other people on the road at risk.

We are discussing the topic at hand - which is that you should not be on the road if you're falling asleep at the wheel.

Actually, I am an accident-free, ticket-free, non-DUI (sleep, drugs, booze) driver - so I've got plenty of ground to stand on here.

I killed them and ate their livers. Honestly, what do you expect? You admitted falling asleep at the wheel, and not only that, but you assume that "everyone's done it" and that "you're not a bad driver". Really. Well then, I'm not a bad driver, I just have a bad habit of being drunk.

How about "See a doctor"? Falling asleep at the wheel is not a "normal thing" despite your suggestion to that effect. Go book an appointment, get a referral to a sleep therapist, something. Usually narcolepsy is a clue into something bigger - sleep apnea, for one.

You've fallen asleep twice while driving?

1. Get some more sleep

OR

2. You probably have a sleep disorder, like sleep apnea, and haven't the slightest clue you have it. Go see your doctor. It doesn't discriminate based on age, sex or weight (though this can make it worse).

And yes, this makes you a bad driver, because you were driving while sleepy. They recently did a study that said sleepy drivers were far more dangerous than drunk drivers.

Oh and, I probably shouldn't be telling you this (because you really should get checked out), but a sleep doctor will send a letter to the DMV and have your license revoked if you don't actively pursue treatment. This is law in many states (as well as many other ailments that can cause you to lose your license).

By treatment I mean doing a sleep study and whatever the doctor recommends after that. They take this stuff seriously. Not only does it endanger other people, but it's a severe health risk to yourself - think about less oxygen getting to your brain while you sleep. They figure it takes 10 years off your life easy, unless there are complications from it like a heart attack.

Again, I reiterate that you're a bad driver if you don't get this taken care of. I just hope my family and I aren't coming the other way when you doze off and cross the yellow line.

Drivers have responsibility to themselves and others on the road, thus if you were driving while feeling very sleepy, you made a irresponsible decision, thus you are indeed a bad driver.

If you have a conscience or sense of ethics, you need to get checked out for a sleep disorder and/or stop driving. If you keep fallng asleep at the wheel you will hurt or kill someone, hopefully yourself rather than an innocent victim. You know you have a problem, so you will be 100% responsible for whatever happens.

My one roomate was taken to court for falling asleep at the wheel and causing an accident. It is your fault, you can';t blame it on being tired.
