Some social service, I guess? BTW, how much do they pay you and for how long? Is it enough to live on?

yep, unemployment insurance (which is generally paid for by employers rather than public subsidies). In NYS I believe you get approx 1/2 (up to $400/week) your former salary for a set number of weeks. It's tough to live on, especially if you're out on your own and have rent/food/insurance to pay for.

So you can get up to $1.6K /month. But for a set number of weeks? And what if you don't find a job during that time? They stop paying you completely and then what? Not another chance?

That's no problem to me. But I was wondering how much you can get from the state and for how long and what the options are, not from your own savings.

you're fvcked. this year congress extended unemployment insurance for most unemployed people, but generally you get a certain number of weeks (~13) after which no unemployment will be paid. Also, you can't claim unemplyment more than once in any 2 year period, and I think there's a lifetime limit to the number of months of benefits you're entitled to collect.

After that, it's time for welfare baby!!!

personally, I've only collected unemployment once in my life, and then it was mostly as a benefit rather than a neccessity.
