If you ever get bored with linux....

try FreeBSD.

I've only been using it for about a year myself and just skimming the surface.

Very different then linux yet still decently easy to figure out.

Doesn't surprise me too much. UNIX != Linux. I've not delt with FreeBSD but I do use SCO and Solaris on a regular basis at work. While similar in ways from a command line point of view, I've found UNIX and Linux to be two entirely different animals. 😉

tried it for a while but didn't really get into it. the portage system seemed nice and made installing stuff pretty painless.

Try OpenBSD, you'll like it better 😉

At any rate, the BSD network stack rules and it makes the best server, which is what it was meant for.

because windows is beyond boring?

Feel like in a boxed cage whenever i'm using windows

You have a lot more freedom using Linux and FreeBSD.

I installed windows on my spare box. The computer felt naked without a healthy dose of UNIX on it. So along came FreeBSD.

Actually....n0cmonkey was giving me the lowdown on OpenBSD.

I'm going to remove Arch Linux off my laptop (it no longer fits my needs)

Thought of either installing

gentoo, freebsd, or openbsd.

i'm tempted to install openbsd just for the experience.

n0c is 😎 and so is OBSD 😛

Give it a shot, the install isn't as plesant as the FreeBSD install, but you're a smart guy, you'll figure it out with a few moments of thought.

MS Windows is basically targeted towards consumer users. A lot of folks are in that category. If it fits your needs, and you have no complaints (I personally hate the licence agreement, ever read the EULA lately?) then keep using it 🙂

Games and ATOT....both of which are best served on windows? I have to disagree on that one.

Games, possibly, you have a point. Lots of games can be played under Linux. However, not most. This is mostly due to the game developers developing strictly for windows. But more games are ported to linux as time goes.

As for ATOT....what is so difficult to surfing ATOT on linux? There are many web browsers available for linux (ie, firefox, mozilla, netscape, opera, konqueror, etc). ALL of which can pretty much surf ATOT. I honestly cannot agree with you on this point.

Ever since I switched to linux I've been having such a hard time surfing ATOT. It's so much harder to type in the url under linux than windows.

I just don't know many people who run linux on their main rig i guess...is support for linux pretty shaky atm? I guess i might give it a shot sooner than i thought tho 😉

Have you ever surfed the web in firefox or opera? I swear at least 50% of websites don't display properly, and 50% of those that DO had to be specifically coded to do so.

I work as a web developer and I hate firefox with an extreme passion.

There are probably more people then you are aware of that use linux on their main rig.

support for linux pretty shaky? Hardware wise? Normally if you install the latest distro verion you should have the latest hardware support. Help support wise, the linux community is constantly growing and it's composed of millions of individuals (is that big enough for you? 😉 )

don't blame the browser, blame the web developers for those sites!

You do realize that IE does not follow W3C standards while firefox does?

Yea right.....

One site I was working on had a simple text box. The width was set to 125 pixels. Specifically. Even the page source said so(on every browser).

What does Firefox do? Display it as 250 pixels! For no reason whatsoever, it just wanted to. I had to add an extra piece of code that halved the width if it was Firefox. Want to tell me thats because all the other browsers aren't following standards?

link to website?

I used to be a Windows fanboi, just because it's what I had and was used to. Then I got a job at a company where all of the developers use Linux on their desktops. Since I had no choice at work, I decided to do it on my own personal laptop as well. I now dual-boot Ubuntu "Hoary" and XP Home. Honestly, I like Linux better now with the exception that wireless isn't quite up to Window's ease of use yet. Since i haven't played any games lately, I rarely boot into Windows anymore.
