I agree completely. It's very annoying when people try to come up with junk that just wastes time or worse could potentially mislead others.

Why are people so afraid to admit they don't know something?

LOL! I knew someone was gonna respond like that! Good job!

Why did you quote your own OP? Bad job! :D

When my roommate doesn't know something he makes it up and pretends that he knows what he's talking about.

Becuase they feel they should know, so they feel a sense of failure when the don't know. People have a hard time admitting their failures, even if they are considered "small".

Just for giggles, next time you're making small talk with some smartypants, ask them if they've heard about the recent power shift in Uzbekministan and what they think about it. Something like four out of five people will make up some crap because they know that nobody in America has any idea what the -stans are or do, or even which region they're in, much less what they're really called. Granted, that may not work as well as it used to (because of Borat), but you see my reasoning. Do the exact same thing with some mythical country that sounds like it's in Africa.

I don't know what exactly it is with people that makes them want to make up stuff so badly, but it's a pretty strong universal something.

I do it because I feel insignificant inside, and making things up makes me feel like I know more than you. That makes me feel like I'm better than you, if even for a moment.

i say it, even class when called on, if i don't say i do not know it will be harder where the teacher sits there looking at me forever and then the whole class starts actually paying attention

Most people that post in the "OFF TOPIC" forum here at Anandtech don't really give a crap about what they post. Look at both the post count and time that they've been here. This will narrow down the numbnuts out of the equation.

When I posted a question about a computer problem........... I get criticized and questioned about my being here since 2001 and not being worthy?? By whom? Someone that joined a year ago.

I don't spend all my time in "OFF TOPIC" as most of you do!

Time will tell for the numbnuts!

it's an ego thing. there's this prick I work with who'll never admit he's wrong, even when he knows nothing about the subjet. Example: he's into linux, but hasn't used a mac since OS9 or older. I've got like, 3 linux machines, so I can put forth an argument to show that macs are significantly easier to use for joe average, etc, but he just dismisses them all as 'crap'. Really makes my blood boil. If he doesn't know something, he'll just say it's 'easy' and mumble some words to do with the general subject, then swiftly shut up. He slates .net, despite knowing nothing about it. His only skill is php, so you'll find him doing high level business application development in a web browser with php instead.

asshole.

I say "I don't know" a lot. Not afraid to admit it but some of the looks I get back are faces of sheer shock. Start saying you don't know for completely random things and you will realize very quickly why people make sh!t up.
