User: The computer isnt doing its stuff
Me: Can you clarify that? what is it not doing?
User: It sends files to another computer. its not doing it
Me: how does it send it?
User: i dont know. it just does
Me: what is it sending to?
User: a server
Me: what server?
User: i dont know
Me: so.. is there a program that you're running to do this?
User: no. it just does it on its own
Me: is this for a paticular job function? for a paticular company process?
User: i dont know. i just push the button, and it does it
Me: what button?
User: on the keyboard
me: which button on the keyboard?
user: the curvy arrow thing
me: ok.. i'm going to need more info to help you. i need to know what you're trying to do, and what the program or computer is trying to do
user: i dont know how to get that info
me: who told you to do this? to press the key?
user: my coworker. but he's gone for the day
me: ok. you're going to need to call him, or your supervisor, to get more info.
user: ok. hang on a second.
<5 minutes pass>
user: never mind. it works. the monitor was turned off.

I work tech support and I can totally relate. Get people all the time who have no idea what the start button is. I also get people who don't know how to type into a box, and one lady even asked me to send her a "manual for the internet."

Seriously, if you don't know wtf a computer is or how to operate one, please don't go out and buy a modem and a computer all at once and expect to achieve something.

Sometimes I wonder what it's like to know as much about computers as that person does. It's gotta be some wonderfully crazy backwards world.

it has to blow your mind, I mean I know how the internet works and it still blows my mind.

Clearly, someone was failing to do the needful. Tell him to put it on a post-it for future reference next time.

LOL.. had someone like that a few years ago.

user called complaining their server was down.
went thru some troubleshooting, and we couldn't communicate with the server. non responsive to ping, to sudo, nothing.

so i ask the user to check the server.. no lights.
trace the power cord.. it's unplugged.
the facilities people unplugged the server power cord to plug in a portable fan because the room was getting "hot" due to AC being down and HVAC needed to replace something in the AC unit

LMAO! guess they didn't bother to see what they were unplugging.

and yet some manager in your company is trying to figure out how to reduce support calls to save the company money. they think there is a technology solution to people not turning on the monitor and then generating another call to the help desk

At least it isn't your coworker who you have to train to do their job...and said person complains to management that they don't get paid as much as you do.

There's this new guy where I work and I'm wondering whether he went through the traing course or if he just walked in and started working 1 day.

I understand if you're new and have questions or need some help, hell i was in the same boat not that long ago, but this guy is completely clueless. He seems to lack the most basic computer skills such as locating a window he was previously working in, or how to use a web browser.

Forget about our job specific procedures...I spend at least 25% of my day walking him through the procedures. I'll walk him through something one time, then the next call he gets he asks for help again and I have to walk him through it all over again.

I cringe every time i hear hm on the phone with a customer. He just doesn't explain anything or what he needs from the customer to work the case. I'd hate to see what his queue looks like and how many fuck ups he's made because he hasn't asked me for help on something.

I've notified my manager twice that this guy just doesn't get it (in nicer terms of course) but no one seems to give a shit. He's wasting my time - maybe I need to specifically say this and that might get them moving.

when in college i had an internship over teh summer dealing with this crap.

my memorable one was when i was called to 'fix' this guys computer that 'wasnt working'

i went into his office and loooked around a bit, then i noticed the PC wasnt even on.

i asked him if he tried to turn it on and he said 'no i always just move the mouse and it turns on.'

i then pushed the power button and it turned on.

all we need to do is program the people.

I have people call me all the time about how to do their job. I always say, you should ask your supervisor..and they just say oh ok as if that was some great revelation.

Yup I could write a small book about the absolute idiocy I have seen in desktop support.

Heh... I support restaurant computers, so I can relate. When something goes down, getting the store to restart it is like pulling teeth!
