I know most of the ones around here are owned by private contractors. Since its not public property and you aren't damaging it...would it be illegal to warn of zombies/trout/midget hookers?

yes. But then, it'd also be a lot of fun.

they have various guides on the net about how to hack those, most should be dead-simple.

All of our portable signs have locks on them. So if you broke the lock...
Of course, most people are too lazy to lock them.
The stationary one are done on a computer in an office.

I have been meaning to ask you if you would be willing to come by with a couple truckloads of dirt and a grater? My road is still a mud bog.

If they caught you red handed, you'd be charged with something.
Pedestrian on a controlled highway; no hardhat in a construction zone
Like Olds stated, if it was locked, vandalism.

I live in Virginia, I'm pretty sure there is a mischief statute that would cover it, too.

best bet is show up with a white hard hat and a construction uniform (maybe avoid the reflective stuff, you don't want to DRAW attention but if someone sees you, you'll look like you belong there). Though if you get caught still, then it would probably be worse.

Putting dirt on mud? Ya, that'll fix it.....
😉

Since those things are technically computers, and you don't have authorization to access it, you could probably be charged for that.

If the vest isn't reflective, someone would notice. New standards went into effect last November.

While the dirt would just make more mud...I'm not quite sure what you would use ONE OF THESE for...
