If you could only have one of these, which one...

Right now I have a choice between keeping my VCR (a little old, but still works decently), or getting a DVD player and having to give the VCR to my parents. I'd still be able to use the VCR when they're not home, but it would be a hassle since it wouldn't be on my TV.

Which is more useful, VCR or a DVD player?

Also note - I don't have the cashflow to buy DVDs regularly.

Do you watch older movies more than newer ones? If so, keep the VCR. If not, go DVD.

Or you could keep the vcr and get a psx2 :D

Depends on your movie/tv habits.

Do you like to tape shows that you missed? Are you only interested in new releases? How often do you rent movies?

To me, a VCR would far more useful. I can go over to just about any major video store and get 3 VHS movies for a couple bucks and keep them for a week. For a DVD on the other hand, it would run me about $3.00 for a two night rental. Just not much "bang for your buck" in DVD's.

You can also hit used movie sales and buy moderately recent VHS movies for a couple bucks a piece.

Keep the VCR, wait 5 months 'till the PS2 prices drop then buy one of those. Problem solved.

Why buy a DVD Player if you can't buy movies to watch on it? Sure you can rent but owning is better.

That is a tough decision. The functionality of a DVD is good-doubles as a cd player. On the other hand you lose the ability to tape shows like the 24 hrs of LaMans and what not. My solution is somewhat different. Take the DVD player and pick up a cheap VCR from some second hand place for $30.

This is easy. Do you record programs? Do you have old VCR tapes you watch regularly? If no to both, get the DVD player. If you ever need a VCR again, you can get one under a hundred bucks now-a-days.
