So you've just been gifted a magic potion... that sends you back to a point in your life (kind of like butterfly effect).

Think of a time you want to go back to and take the potion. When you go back, you'll briefly remember the rest of your life, but it will fade away and become nothing more than a feeling of deja vu. The trick is that prior to ingesting the potion, you can make a mental list of what you would do different, and this would stick. Once your life progresses to this same point again, you'll briefly get your memory back and can make a choice - keep going, or revert to your previous life where you left off.

So what is your list? Keep it short... no more than 5.

Clearly the best option is to go back and work the stock market. Depending on how far back you can go, get in on IPOs for big name companies.
Alternatively, write down winning lottery ticket numbers. In fact, use lottery winnings to fund acquisition of stocks of companies like Microsoft and Google.

Or go back in time and choose never to start posting in ATOT: no doubt we'd all be real millionaires rather than ATOT millionaires.

Pfft so easy.

Open all credit cards, borrow all and liquidate all assets then buy google stock at opening. Sell it in 18 months for 466 percent gain.

Hmm but then again, that's a real shitty way to make money. You have to pay interest for 18 months and only quadruple your return which doesn't skyrocket your return.

Just memorize powerball numbers and play them. GG.

So you're saying that once I've aged back to today, I get this potion to do it all again? So what does it matter what 5 things I choose now if I can always go back and refine 5 things constantly vs just going back once and able to change everything I've always want changed?

hm. I think I'd have...

-applied myself more in high school
-not let myself get overweight (granted, I've lost the weight, but I spent my teens and early/mid 20's weighing 3-400 pounds)
-gone to my first choice college
-majored in something more career-oriented
-had more fun, been less serious

No, I'm saying you have the opportunity to undo the potion. Can't re-use it.

Oh, so does this potion cease to exist the 2nd time? Can't one of the things I want to remember is how to obtain said potion? Kinda like wishing for more wishes.

Sure but why not do it now? I.E. I wish I picked up a musical instrument when I was younger, but starting violin a year ago is better than not having started at all.

Money is an easy answer because you can do almost anything with money. Donate to charities, live off of investments and have free time for classes and living. If I didn't have to earn a living I could happily take a ton of classes; culinary, language, musical, gardening, whatever. I could also travel around the world, or be like boat family and live in a toilet for 7 years.

Also, ATOT values wit and creative responses more than hopes and dreams. And sarcasm. Could always use more sarcasm.

I would go back to when I was 8 and my uncle came over.

This time, when he asks "Hey buddy, do you want help pushing in your stool?", I will know he isnt talking about a chair.

I can think of 3 distinct things I'd like to change but 2 of them were out of my control so this potion idea is useless to me.

Given the limitation of having to choose 5 things, it does become quite hard to decide whether I should be selfish and make changes to make my life and those around me better or to sacrifice that for a greater purpose like stopping 9/11 from happening.

My list:

I'd return to 9th grade.
- Push myself to be very athletic while eating a ton of protein and vegetables. I was lazy and ate poorly, which I think had long lasting effects on my body to this day.
- Get straight A's. (I could have, but the work was so boring that I'd do just enough to pass)
- By getting straight A's, have access to more college choices. Attend a college out of state, perhaps abroad. And actually finish my degree.
- Stay in a dorm at the college of choice. And have as much sex as possible.
- After graduating, live alone in a small place, keep expenses to a minimum and just save until I could buy a house with cash.

This is actually the list I'm going to encourage my kids to follow.
