What would you rather have, an IS model or an ES.

Can someone explain to me the lexus' models to me?

LS, ES, GS, IS?

LS is the flagship model that can parallel park itself.
GS is a step below the LS, sporty sedan?
IS targeted for the younger crowd.. 3 series buyers
ES highend camry

I like the first gen GS a lot, and would buy a clean one if I found it for a nice price.

IS = Small and Sporty...like a BMW 3 Series
ES = Pimped Camry...roomy and luxurious, but not sporty. Smooth Buick type ride.
GS = Large and Sporty. Roomy like the ES, but sportier with faster engines. BMW 5 Series Competitor
LS = Large and Luxurious. Sportier now than ever with all the goodies you could ever want. A very nice car. BMW 7 Series/Mercedes S class competitor

My dad believes that the ES is a better buy than the IS. I laughed in his face at the thought of that..

For your dad's use, he is probably right. The ES is much roomier inside and is very well apointed for the price. It still has a strong engine, but does not handle as well as the IS...but perfectly fine for 99% of driving. Unless your dad likes to drive a sports car, he would probably be infinitely happier with the ES.

I would have to test drive both first.

If the IS is quiet and luxurious enough, that would be my choice.

I own a 2006 IS. Great car. Fun to drive, very sporty, excellent brakes. My only complaint is that it is a fairly small sedan. Rear seat room is cramped and the trunk is smallish.

LS-Biggest luxury sedan, RWD (V8 only)
GS-Slightly smaller but more sporty than the LS, RWD (V8 optional, V6 standard)
ES-Camry based sedan, larger than IS but not as sporty, FWD (V6 only)
IS-Compact sport sedan, RWD (200hp V6 standard, 300hp V6 optional)

Learn about the IS and ES, they're $35k cars. What can you buy from BMW, Cadillac, or Porsche for that price? Not much. $ for $, the Lexus IS is the best deal out there. Price comparable cars don't even come CLOSE.

After arguing with him, he's now saying it's not for him, but for my sister, who lives in newyork and comes here once a year... My dad has become very impulsive and stupid in the last few years. Never discusses anything with his family, just goes out and buys things, then 'hopes' that we'll like it.

I can only assume my sister will hate the car, he also choose an ugly color as well.
